Metzeler Sportec M9RR
The replacement for the much-loved M7RR, the Metzeler M9RR is a sports tyre that’s more than good enough for fast group trackday pace. Its high silica compound gives it a very fast warm up, even in cold and wet conditions. We think this is one of the best Sports tyres for UK roads.

Description
The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Metzeler M9RR
What is it: Metzeler have a brilliant product line-up and these M9RRs sit at the top of the tree when it comes to sports tyres – they’re one of our favourites. They are available in all the common sizes including the sometimes hard to get hold of 160/60 ZR17, 190/50 ZR17 and even a 150/60 and 150/70 for peppy small-cc sportsbikes. The M9RR is a great tyre for fast road riders on sportsbikes or super nakeds, who want to enjoy the limits of grip in confidence.
What tyre it replaces: The M9RR replaces the very popular M7RR.
Who is it aimed at:Â A real jack of all trades sports tyre. Perfect for fast road riders and easily capable of fast group trackday pace but at the same time it’ll handle the wet UK roads and take you to the South of France and back without hitting the tread bars.
Typically seen on: The M9RR works on a huge range of bikes. From the smaller stuff, like the sporty 125, to middleweight bikes like the Triumph Trident 660 or Kawasaki ER6, right up to the lairy super naked and superbikes like the BMW S1000R, Aprilia Tuono V4R, Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Yamaha R1.
M9RR highlights: Seriously fast warm-up time thanks to its high silica compound. The profile of the M9RR leads itself to sharp and responsive handling, while at the other end of the scale they’re incredibly planted in the wet. You can expect to get between 4,000 and 6,000 miles from a pair of M9RRs, depening on how, what and where you ride. That’s good mileage for a Sports tyre.
M9RR sizes: Fitments for pretty much any road-going bike from the past decade. Metzeler also produces the M9RR in 19″ front wheel sizes, meaning that you can run them on your Adventure bike. A Ducati Multistrada 950S on M9RRs? Yes please!
A slightly cheaper option: The Sportec M7RR is a cracking tyre and that bit cheaper now that the M9RR is on the scene.
A track-focused option: If you’re going to be heading out on track the M9RR is a great tyre for that but for a touch more outright grip, check out the Racetec K3. But when it comes to wet weather performance and road riding, the M9RR beats the RR K3, hands down.
The competition: Launched in March 2020, they replace the M7RR and go up against the likes of the Michelin Power 5, Bridgestone S22 and Pirelli Diablo Rosso 4 and the Continental SportAttack4. However the M9RR was awarded a RiDE magazine Recommended triangle in their June 2021 ‘Sporty Road Tyres’ test. “Wonderful M9RRs have been proven to work on a wide variety of bikes and in all conditions. They scrubbed-in and warmed-up quickly and grip well. We like…”
Metzeler says:
The Metzeler Sportec M9 RR is a Hypersport tyre offering riders:
- 100% silica compounds for very fast warm up in cold and wet conditions.
- More consistent performance of varying road surfaces.
- Increased consistency on track, for serious grip lap after lap.
- Huge range of sizes, even available for the big ‘adventure’ bikes on the market.
What’s the difference between the M7RR and M9RR?
The Metzeler M7RR is only a dual compound rear/ The M9RR is dual compound at both ends. The M9RR is 100% full silicawhereas the M7RR has 70% silica content on the rear in the central section and 100% elsewhere. There’s also a different tread pattern and carcass.
Metzeler Says:
The Supersport tyre for your daily leans, enhancing the pleasure of riding without worrying about the unexpected, be that changing tarmac or weather conditions.
Outstanding handling
METZELER SPORTECâ„¢ M9 RR innovative chord technology has contributes to a larger space for the rubber to dynamically perform, without effecting the stiffness.
Great riding pleasure
The strong structure provides a quick and predictable response to riding inputs whilst at the same time delivers an enjoyable, smooth and relaxed riding experience.
Quick warm-up, impressive wet response
Supersport tyre with full silica in all compounds. Thanks to innovative mixing process and to ultra-fine silica, SPORTECâ„¢ M9 RR features full silica in all compounds for both front and rear sizes.
High grip since the first corner
SPORTEC M9 RR performs optimally also at low temperature. The speed of warm up, allows you to confidently enjoy your first corner.
Supersport tread design optimised for water drainage
The sharp central contact patch efficiently moves standing water into the adjacent longitudinal grooves. The grooves deliver outstanding stability, by draining more water as speeds increase and as the weather worsens.
Plenty of grip to face tough challenges
High cornering grip, large consistency over the entire profile. The Cap&Base dual-compound layout consists of a soft compound on the side to promote high cornering grip. This is supported by a harder layer to ensure consistency and thermal balance. Regardless of how wet the surface is, or the level of the tarmac, significant levels of grip is provided.
Great stability on straight, superb confidence at full lean
The directional centre grooves deliver stability when upright. Mid-lean grooves maximise the grip to deliver flawless feedback when cornering. The slick shoulders further enhance your riding confidence when at full lean.
Maximum performance throughout the entire tyre lifespan:
Perfected thermal balance
Full silica prevents overheating and preserves tyre integrity, for the maximum performance throughout the entire lifespan.
Extended dual-compound
Dual-compound for both front and rear sizes optimises abrasion resistance and extends mileage by more than 10%*

Press Reviews
“Sat between sports touring and fast road/trackday rubber the Metzeler’s new Sportec M9 RR is a one-stop-shop tyre for the sporty riders amongst us and a step on from the superb M7 RR and that’s just about the best compliment you can give them.” – MCN
“With it’s do it all nature the new Metzeler Sportec M9 RR is likely to be a very fitting choice for riders who need year-round performance with enough clout for the odd trackday. While they won’t offer the same apex-hunting speeds a bespoke trackday or road tyre, they will offer more confidence in the wet, feel on the road and will almost certainly last a lot longer.” – Visordown
“On the road, I felt confident in the product and could commit without hesitation to every corner. The upright balance, noise and comfort was ideal – though not largely better or worse than I’ve experienced before. There are rival tyres more suited to a more track bias type of riding mix but if the majority, if not all, of your miles are going to be on road and at more than commuting pace then the new Metzeler [M9RR] options are going to be a popular choice.” – Bennetts
Metzeler Sportec M9RR versus the rivals
metzeler m7rr vs m9rr
Introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the popular Sportec M5, the M7RR is a truly do-it-all sports tyre for riders who use their bikes in all conditions. We’ve trackdayed them, ridden them through downpours and commuted on them. The 7RR is a great choice for fast road riders.
metzeler m9rr vs michelin road 5
Dropping the word Pilot from the name but the Road 5 is the evolution of Michelin’s most popular road tyre. Its distinctive Sipes technology helps make this a brilliant tyre in the wet while its fast warm up and edge grip are what makes it a firm favourite. Available in GT spec for heavy tourers and Trail for Adventure bike wheel sizes.
metzeler m9rr vs bridgestone s22
The S22 is Bridgestone’s tyre for Sportsbikes and fast road riders. It takes over from the S21 and offers superb outright grip, fast warm up and good wet weather performance.
metzeler m9rr vs rosso corsa 2
The original Rosso Corsa became a firm favorite with knee downers amongst us, the Rosso Corsa 2 took it to another level. Capable of embarassing slick shod riders on a trackday or commuting into the office on a wet Wednesday morning this really is a cracking tyre.
metzeler m9rr vs diablo rosso 3
Yep, The Rosso 3 replaced the Rosso 2, it improved over the previous model with a sexier tread pattern which created a larger footprint at mid lean and a new bi compound. It was released in 2017 as Pirelli’s do it all sports tyre.
metzeler m9rr vs dunlop mk3
Replacing the Sportsmart 2 max the Sportsmart Mk 3 was released in early 2019. This one fits in the middle of the range a sports tyre with good mileage and pretty reasonable wet weather performance.
metzeler m9rr vs michelin power 5
A direct replacement for the Power RS, the Power 5 is designed for fast road riding. It has a very low (11%) void ratio meaning there’s maximum amount of rubber in contact with the road but with additional silica you won’t get caught out if it rains. If you’re running a sportsbike, these are well worth a look.
metzeler sportec m9rr vs bridgestone s22
The S22 is Bridgestone’s tyre for Sportsbikes and fast road riders. It takes over from the S21 and offers superb outright grip, fast warm up and good wet weather performance.
metzeler m9rr vs racetec rr
Metzeler’s Racetec RR is their denomination for their supersports and track-ready tyres. The RR range comprises of road-legal fast road rubber right up to track-only slicks. Well loved by trackdayers and professional racers, they even hold an Isle of Man TT record.
