Description

The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Bridgestone S22

What is it: The S22 is Bridgestone’s tyre for Sportsbikes and fast road riders. It takes over from the S21 and offers superb outright grip, fast warm up and good wet weather performance.

What tyre it replaces: The Bridgestone S21

Who is it aimed at: This is a road-focused but sporty tyre. If your typical year of riding includes a bit of commuting, lots of weekend trips and perhaps a week-long adventure abroad or a foray on track, then the S22 is a great option.

Typically seen on: A broad spectrum of bikes, including Sportsbike riders who might go on track all the way over to middleweight riders who want a sticky road tyre. It’s the original fitment on bikes like the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX and the KTM SuperDuke R. The S22 suits anything from a Yamaha MT-07 to a Monster 1200, a Honda CBR600RR to a Kawasaki Z900.

Bridgestone S22 highlights: The front is a dual compound while the rear has three compounds – still quite rare in modern road tyres. The three rear compounds are set out with a harder central belt for added durability and mileage, a rigid but soft shoulder for grip and stability mid-corner with a softer edge for the best grip at maximum lean.

Bridgestone S22  sizes: There are two front sizes, 110/70 R17 and 120/70 ZR17 and a huge range of rear sizes from a 140-section rear for 125s right up to a 200-section rear for the Superbikes.

Mileage: You ought to be able to get 4,000 miles from a set of S22s, we’ve had riders in our workshop for replacements at 8,000 miles – it depends on the type of riding you do and how you ride. For optimum grip and wear, we set the tyre pressures to 42psi rear and 36psi front.

Also worth a look: The sports road category is hotly contested. The rivals to the S22 are the Michelin Power 5, the Metzeler M9RR, The new Pirelli Rosso 4 and the Dunlop Sportsmart Mk3.

Fancy a sportier option? The Bridgestone RS11 is a step up from the S22 in terms of outright grip and trackday potential but if you’re not going on track the S22 is a better real-world option.

A more road focused option: If you’re a daily commuter, they’ll give you all the grip you need but you might prefer a pair of Bridgestone T32s if you want a faster warm-up, higher mileage and better cold-weather and wet weather capability.

Bridgestone says:

NO COMPROMISE!
By adopting new compounding technology, Bridgestone’s hypersport flagship model is showing no compromise in wet and dry performance on top of increasing the total handling package.

CORNERING SPEED
The S22 has adopted a new pattern design in line with the needs and requirements of hypersport users. The light handling brought by the tyre combined with its feedback and cornering performance for maximum confidence are a perfect match for any hypersport rider.

WEAR LIFE
Combining excellent wet performance, best in class dry grip and ultimate handling feel without sacrificing the wear life of the tyre.

  • Available in both ‘H’ and ‘Z’ speed ratings.

S22 vs Rivals

Bridgestone S22 vs Michelin Power 5

These two tyres are a close match. They’re both Sports tyres, designed for fast road riding and those who want ultimate levels of grip but they’re also more than good enough for a trackday in the Fast group. The S22 has a tri-compound rear while the Michelin is a dual compound. Both will be great option for a British summer, where the odd rain shower gets in the way of a sunny weekend ride.

Bridgestone S22 vs Pirelli

Which Pirelli tyre is the Bridgestone closest to? That is a very very good question, even Pirelli or Bridgestone won’t be able to answer it. I think the S22 is inbetween the Rosso Corsa 2 and Rosso 3 and now the Rosso 4. The Rosso Corsa 2 I’ve always thought of the best feeling road and track tyre out there.

Bridgestone Says:

The Battlax Hypersport S22 is Bridgestone’s latest hypersport tyre: a thrilling new product that will allow you to experience the full extent of your bike’s performance on the road!

The technical upgrades on the S22 show performance enhancements in all areas. We had created the ultimate hypersport tyre for all conditions.

S22 Technical Info

Increase the Sea/Land ratio in the shoulder area Sharp 3D end groove for optimum rigidity. Optimize groove angle and alignment to redirect the working forces on the tyre. the impact is positive on handling lightness, water drainage, feedback and limit control.

5LC Compound structure (Rear) : Balance between Grip and cornering stability with a harder center, softer traction and softest edge compound. New traction area compound applied with optimized resin components in the initial compound mixture in order to upgrade the grip characteristics. New center compound adopting fine silica molecular approach : Generating a higher silica molecule ratio (+25% vs. S21) touching the road

Pattern design and compound changes are reducing the slippage towards the end of the contact area, this generates more grip. Increasing cornering speed in the dry
by 15% giving 1.2% faster dry laptime. Generating less spinning from lower speeds onwards in Wet conditions giving 5% faster wet laptime.

Ultimate sports tire with outstanding DRY Grip and lightness

Exclusive front & rear pattern design and specially developed compounds will give high levels of grip and quick handling. Astonishing riding feel makes the bike lighter. Winding roads are even more enjoyable. Also, improvement in WET handling and WET grip will give you a sport riding with one step higher range.

Recommended for:

  • Riders who mostly enjoy sports riding.
  • Riders of supersports motorcycles who want a combination of performance in the wet and long life.
  • Riders who are thinking of starting riding on the racetrack.

Press Reviews

“For the track section of our test at Cadwell Park, we decided to use warmers for added peace of mind, but we soon realised that we needn’t bother because the S22s not only give a decent amount of grip from cold, but also only take a lap or so to get fully up to temperature. By the afternoon we had all but sacked off tyre warmers. Despite the Bridgestones being a genuine road tyre, all of the bikes were tested in the fast group at a very respectable pace, and after a full day of blitzing round Lincolnshire’s finest racetrack, the hoops were not even nearly past their best. On the road, the S22s did a grand job, and any wheel spinning or sideways action was wholeheartedly down to our throttle hand ham-fistedness, and at Bruntingthorpe, even at 190mph+, they did an impeccable job of keeping us going in a straight line.” – Fast Bikes Magazine

—

“Given the restricted opportunity to assess Bridgestone’s specific claims, the most important laps of the test were the first of each session – particularly the first in the morning as the morning dew burnt off the GP circuit, with temperatures around 12°C. This limited window of cold/cold-ish track testing revealed the S22s provide reassuring feedback and composure from the off, even run at lower track pressures without warmers. The ZX-6R I chose to sample them on behaved predictably with none of the buckling, squirming feel a cold sports tyre at low pressure can give, and felt safe to start turning up the pace within a lap, and within a couple the S22s were performing well at full lean and more aggressive throttle use.

“Turn-in rate across the bikes I rode (Fireblade, S1000RR, GSX-R1000R, CBR650R and ZX-636R) was quick with decent feel allowing confident use of the brakes as you tip in.The bikes provided were used across three groups of riders for at least half a day each, and the rate of wear and drop in performance wasn’t excessive: a GSX-R with a well-torn rear still held in there with respectable performance in the very last session.” – Performance Bikes

—

“[…] after the first session, I switched to a BMW S1000RR to see how the tyres could cope with a more powerful, more agile bike. And they coped just fine. Again, the tyres dished out plenty of confidence straight from the off to bury your knee into the tarmac, and it wasn’t long before I felt like I could start to take liberties with what is, essentially, a road tyre.

As I started to increase the speed, the first minor limitation with the S22s was the ever so slight lethargy that the bike seemed to suffer from when being pulled from left to right. This is really only when compared to a proper track focused tyre, like Bridgestone’s R11, or V02 slick, and in all honesty is only a limitation on track – in fact, realistically on the road (which is where this tyre was designed for) aggressive, track focused handling would often hinder you more than help you. I’m just being super critical.

“What I cannot be critical about, though, is the front tyre. Not on the ZX-10, the S1000RR nor the Gixer 10000 that I had ridden in the morning did I manage to push the front or cause the front tyre to do anything untoward. It was completely and utterly planted, no matter how hard I seemed to push it.I even did a couple of sessions on a Kawasaki ZX-6R with the sole intention of trying to make the front do something that it shouldn’t. I couldn’t, but what a laugh I had trying.

And as far as the rear goes, I had to give it some proper hammer to get that to spin, too. With a 200bhp sportsbike it is certainly possible, and when giving it berries I did start to have some big slides, but they were nearly always controllable, even for a ham-fisted dope like me.

Any good?

There are loads of good tyres out there these days. Some are great for racing, some are great for touring. It really is horses for courses. Bridgestone told us they haven’t compromised with these tyres, but the way I see it, the S22s are the perfect compromise. They really are a tyre you could use on your road bike all-year round, that will give you great handling on the road for plenty of miles, and that you can still use should you want to enter a track day or three. I may not have been on lap record pace at Jerez on the S22s, but I would have certainly been well into the fast group had it been a trackday, so I’d say they are most certainly capable of doing what most of us need a tyre to do on track.” Boothy, Fast Bikes magazine.

Bridgestone S22 versus the rivals

s22 vs power rs
Now discontinued, the Power RS was Michelin’s super sticky tyres for fast road riding. It has been replaced by the new Power 5.

s22 vs t31
Bridgestone’s T30 was the replacement of the BT023. A really good tyre for Touring and commuting, it was repalced by the updated T30 evo.

s22 vs rosso corsa 2
The original Rosso Corsa became a firm favorite with knee downers amongst us, the Rosso Corsa 2 took it to another level. Capable of embarassing slick shod riders on a trackday or commuting into the office on a wet Wednesday morning this really is a cracking tyre.

s22 vs rosso 3
Yep, The Rosso 3 replaced the Rosso 2, it improved over the previous model with a sexier tread pattern which created a larger footprint at mid lean and a new bi compound. It was released in 2017 as Pirelli’s do it all sports tyre.

s22 vs rs10
The RS10 was created using Bridgestone’s knowledge gained whilst as sole tyre supplier to the MotoGP world championship. Now replace by the new R11.

bridgestone s22 vs Michelin road 5
Dropping the word Pilot from the name but the Road 5 is the evolution of Michelin’s most popular road tyre. Its distinctive Sipes technology helps make this a brilliant tyre in the wet while its fast warm up and edge grip are what makes it a firm favourite. Available in GT spec for heavy tourers and Trail for Adventure bike wheel sizes.

s22 vs m7rr
Introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the popular Sportec M5, the M7RR is a truly do-it-all sports tyre for riders who use their bikes in all conditions. We’ve trackdayed them, ridden them through downpours and commuted on them. The 7RR is a great choice for fast road riders.

s22 vs m9rr
The replacement for the much-loved M7RR, the M9RR is a sports tyre that’s more than good enough for fast group trackday pace. Its 100% silica compound gives it a very fast warm up in cold and wet conditions and even though it’s a sporty tyre, it’s also a great tyre in the wet.

Bridgestone s22 vs Michelin Power 5
A direct replacement for the Power RS, the Power 5 is designed for fast road riding. It has a very low (11%) void ratio meaning there’s maximum amount of rubber in contact with the road but with additional silica you won’t get caught out if it rains. If you’re running a sportsbike, these are well worth a look.
