Royal Enfield Scram 411 Tyre Size

Royal Enfield’s air-cooled Scram 411 runs a 100/90/19 front tyre and a 120/90/17 rear tyre. 

It’s a similar spec to the Himalayan that the Scram is based on but the difference is the front wheel, which is 21″ on the Himalayan (a better choice for off-road) while it’s 19″ on the Scram.

One of our customers described their Scram to us as ‘a cooler version of the Himalayan’ and while we think that’s pretty accurate, we always thought the Himalayan WAS  cool, mainly because it has that back-to-basics approach to biking that we love.

Using a basic 410cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, the Scram certainly does take it back to basics and the £4k asking price makes this an absolute bargain.

One of the things we love about these Royal Enfields is the fact you can buy a basic model, for peanuts and then spend a little more making it much better and better-suited to the sort of riding you’re doing.

Royal Enfield Scram Stock Tyres

The stock bikes comes with CEAT Grip XL tyres. 

These tyres look the part and lots of owners reckon they’re OK (a few customers have had nothing but bad words to say about them) but they help keep the bike’s price down and probably suit most riders.

Depending on whether you’re a tarmac fan or you like getting dirty, there’s a different path you can take and better tyres you can fit.

Royal Enfield Scram Best Tyres

The stock CEAT tyres are OK but nothing more.

However, despite the Scram being a more road-focused bike, some Scram owners will want to head properly off-road and so we have some better road choices and more off-road capable tyres for the trail lovers.

Pure Road

Avon Roadrider Mk 2 – Popular with modern classic riders and Himalayan owners also rate them as they have good road manners and return decent mileage. A good choice for the Scram.

Bridgestone BT46 – Another good no-nonsense road tyre.

Continental Trail Attack 3 – Our most popular Adventure tyre for road riders. Yes it has trail in the name but it’s a road tyre really and would suit the Scram well.

Anlas Capra R – A decent budget tyre

Avon Trailrider – Our most popular tyre for road-riding trail hunters.

Continental ContiEscape A much better version of the stock tyres.

Pirelli MT90 A/T – As above. A very capable road tyre with good off-road ability.

Off-Road

Bridgestone AX41 – Very capable off-road tyre.

Continental TKC80 – A brilliant off-road capable tyre.

Pirelli MT21 Rallycross – An excellent Enduro-style tyre.

Don’t forget your inner tubes

There are essentially three different types of motorcycle inner tube: Road, Reinforced and Heavy-Duty.

For the majority of riders, Road is all you need. If you are worried about punctures, just keep on top of your pressures and you’ll be fine. Most punctures come from the tube being nipped between the rim and the tyre, due to under-inflation and not from a sharp object penetrating the tyre and inner tube.

If you’re mainly riding off-road and keeping speeds under 50mph, then you can consider a Reinforced tube. These are popular with MX and Enduro riders. If you use your Adventure or Trail bike more off-road than you do on, then a reinforced tube is worth a look.

If you’re only riding off-road, i.e. competing in an Enduro then you can consider Heavy Duty tubes. These are not safe to fit to road bikes or bikes riding at constant speeds above 40mph. Heavy Duty tubes weight over 1.5kg per tube (as opposed to around 400g for a regular tube). They get hot and can fail due to excess heat. So fitting a set to decrease your chances of getting a puncture is counter-productive.
