Description

The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Avon Roadrider MkII

What is it: The new version of Avon’s original Roadrider, a popular tyre for commuters and riders of retro bikes. They’re available in a huge range of sizes, to fit almost any bike.

What tyre it replaces: Avon Roadrider

Who is it aimed at: Riders of classics and modern classics who want to keep the bike looking authentic but also want decent quality modern rubber underneath them, so they can ride the bike the way it was intended to be ridden.

Typically seen on: Mid ’80s bikes right up to the modern stuff. Anything from a Suzuki GS1000 to a Triumph Street Twin or Guzzi V7.

Avon Roadrider Mk2 highlights: The Mark 2 runs an all-new compound of rubber, which improves grip, especially in mixed and wet conditions. The tyre’s carcass also has a stiffer construction, making the tyre more responsive.

Roadrider Mark 2 sizes: Available in a wide variety of fitments, from 15″ rears right up to 21″ fronts.

Also worth a look: There are a few good rivals to the Avon, including the Bridgestone BT46, the new Michelin Road Classic, and the Metzeler Roadtec 01 Cross-Ply.

Avon says:

The Avon Roadrider MKII is a Sport Mileage tyre offering riders:

  • Stiffer construction for improved stability and handling.
  • Brand new compound for confidence-inspiring wet weather grip and performance.
  • Sizeable improvement in wet braking performance over the original Roadrider.
  • Available in H rated (up to 130mph) and V rated (up to 149mph) fitments.
  • REINF = reinforced.
  • All sizes tubeless type.

Designed for motorcycles of all ages, the Roadrider MKII provides a step forward in performance and reliability over its predecessor.

ROADRIDER MKII

  1. TIMELESS APPEARANCE
Cutting-edge performance with aesthetics that suit bikes of all ages.
  2. NEW TYRE CONSTRUCTION
Enhanced handling and stability in both wet and dry conditions.
  3. ENHANCED SIDEWALL DESIGN
Reduction in the effects of ozone degradation.

Avon says

Key benefits of the Avon Roadrider MKII include better grip in wet and dry conditions, reduced wear and shorter braking distances. Wet testing indicates a sizeable improvement in stopping distance compared to the Avon Roadrider.

By introducing an updated sport touring tyre, Avon Tyres is aiming to cement its position as a leading player in the market. In fact, its Roadrider tyre is factory fitted to Royal Enfield’s 350cc bikes.

Overall, the Roadrider MKII is available in 31 sizes and 37 specifications, covering H and V speed ratings and universal options. In addition to the expanded size offering, a classic tread and sidewall appearance makes the tyre suitable for bikes of all ages.

Dominic Clifford, Global Avon Motorcycle Manager, said, “The Roadrider MKII will enable us to build on the success of the Roadrider. Our design team have done a brilliant job to take the many successful elements of the Roadrider and improve them further. Given the strong benchmark, this was no mean feat.”

Press Review

“With the back end undone and the MOT imminent, I took the opportunity to replace the nearly exhausted Avon Roadrider rear tyre with more of the same. Since acquired in 2012 my CBX has worn Avons and the previous 130/80 eighteen incher had lasted a good 13,000 miles and never found me wanting for grip, which ain’t bad for a 93bhp bike which gets ridden boisterously.” Mark Williams, BIKE magazine

Great Service

Great value and service.

Not the best person to write a review?

Just as the title suggests, I would question whether I am the best person to write a tyre review. I am such a Steady Eddy that I doubt my tyres even get up to temperature, my bike is a retro styled modern classic which no doubt is superior in every way to the bike it's modelled on yet would be considered pedestrian by the majority of sportsbike owners and probably sport tourer owners for that matter.
New tyres always feel good, especially after a thousand or so miles on a flattened off rear, but I wouldn't be able to feel a difference between brands unless they were spectactually rubbish.
So why Avon Roadrider Mk2? Whenever I have bought new tyres for my road bikes, I have always bought Avon, from my FS1E in 1980. I have never been disappointed as mileage is as important as performance to me and as you may guess from the description of my riding style, I do not have any ginormous scars or metal screws in my limbs. I also like to support British companies when I can. So that's it, not really a tyre review per se, but also not a parroting of manufacturers advertising as so many "reviews" are these days, just my thoughts on why I have, and will continue to buy Avon. Cheerio.

AVON Roadrider MKII for Interceptor 650

Arrived in good time and a huge improvement on the stock tyres on my 2021 Interceptor (came with CEAT not Pirelli). Grips really well, not been caught in heavy rain yet but I don't doubt these will be grippy. Price is excellent too in comparison to other sizes, also made in the UK which is also a bonus.

rubbish

The Avon Roadrider MKII are absolute rubbish !!! After 6 (!) Months I didn't get a sticker because the tyres were cracked! .. Before that I had the tyre in use for a year .. until I didn't get a badge anymore because of tears .. Unfortunately only the Avon tyre is available in the dimension with V index. Avon is unusable!

little rubber roundy things

I have a Guzzi V7 that was shod with Pirelli's that didn't like uneven road surfaces. I bought these and what a difference. Grips well through tight twisty B and A roads, sure footed in the rain too. Recommended.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

5 Stars

I wasn't sure the size inner tubes I needed, so rang. They were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me the information I needed. Within 5 minutes I had got my answers, tubes ordered, paid and receipted - wow. I am usually cautious about using someone for first time, and not local (I live in Notts). I do recommend Two Tyres. Great job guys.

5 Stars

Called up and was able to get an appointment for the same day to replace both tyres on my BMW R1200 GSA. Not only was it great to get seen so quickly, compared to the 5 week wait I had been quoted by Motorrad, but Chris was able to offer some advice and guidance on which tyres best suited my needs. I cannot praise the service enough from Chris and the team and I will definitely be back for my next set of tyres!

Dan McNaughton

5 Stars

Great service from these guys, I ordered on line and accidentally ordered two items the same, maybe clicked twice waiting for the page to change. They called me to check this wasn't a mistake (which it was) and immediately refunded me for the accidental purchase and sent out just one item. I know I'll be using them to get my tyres & tubes in future.
