Description
If you’re an Adventure-bike rider but you do most of your riding on the tarmac, the Trailrider is a great option.
Here’s what Motorcycle Sport & Leisure magazine have to say about the Avon Trailrider:
“Avon says it took two full years to develop the new TrailRider tyre, and it’s specifically designed for the Adventure bike rider who’s most likely to be riding on the road. That means high mileage, good grip, stability and impeccable performance under heavy loads.”
Using technology from the other rubber in its range, the Melksham-based manufacturer has incorporated an Advanced Variable Belt construction to control sidewall flex. The tyres have are silica-rich, promised to enhance wet grip, while the rear is a multi-compound construction (softer on the edge, harder on the centre) to extend the tyre’s life when riding in a straight line.
Sipes in the radial TrailRiders are small cuts that create extra grooves, improving water-displacement and controlling the tyre’s temperature. Avon’s 3D sipes have interlocking points inside that are designed to limit tread flex, but still allow the rubber to warm up quickly; when upright, they’re open, but lean the tyre over and the sipes’ ‘teeth’ cut into the pattern, effectively closing up to increase the level of grip when leant right over.
It’s claimed to be designed for 90% road use, and 10% off-road use – with the high level of silica and ‘Enhanced Aqua Flow’ tread pattern, this is clearly a tyre designed primarily to get you through all weathers on most European roads. So ask yourself… what riding do you really do?
Avon Trailrider Highlights
- New Super Rich Silica Compound using the very latest compounding technology to enhance wet grip.
- Multi-compound treads on radial rears to enhance mileage and grip.
- High tech carcass construction and next-generation compounds deliver superb grip and handling.
- 90% on-road, 10% off-road.
- Interlocking three-dimensional points hidden in the sipes to improve stability and grip, limit tread flex and allow the tyre to warm up quickly – 3D SIPES (radial tyres).
Press Reviews
“The Avon TrailRider dual-sport tyres cope with almost everything – but do slip on a muddy rock, so it takes a push to get the bike up one steep hill. But I’ve ridden far tougher terrain than I ever thought I would – far tougher than I hope to find on my trip – without dropping the bike. I’m confident and ready for a real adventure.” – Simon Weir, RiDE magazine

The TrailRider’s most impressive character trait is the way it affects the attitude of heavy Adventure bikes in the corners. It takes a fair bit of effort to turn a 200-plus Kilo motorcycle but that can be helped along in a big way by a front tyre profile working for you rather than against. The TrailRider is a tyre working with you. Bavaria’s wealth of smooth-surfaced roads in that neck of the woods are awash with long corners that give plenty of time to get a feel for exactly what a tyre is doing at any point of a corner, at any lean angle. Long, smooth bends flow through the lush, green countryside and regardless of the tyres this is a lovely place to ride a motorcycle. Squarer tyres are predictable but can be too slow. Neither do you want things too quick so you end up falling into every corner. Somewhere in the middle is about right for Adv bikes and that’s where the TrailRider sits.
The transition from upright to full lean can be slower on a heavy bike, with all the weight pushing straight as you brake and turn, they can be quite slow-steering and potentially harder work the faster you go. The TrailRider all but quashes this by steering relatively quickly compared to some dual-sport tyres and helping all the bikes I tested feel pretty happy turning-in. Which is no bad thing because it makes the likes of Yamaha’s generously proportioned Super Tenere lose its slightly vague feeling front end and feel more agile. Livened up with that positive front tyre profile I had more confidence and it was hard not to enjoy the twisting German roads on all of the test bikes.
There were no smaller capacity bikes, which have narrower tyre sizes, less weight, less power, so my only complaint perhaps is to say it would have been good to try a smaller, more docile bike.
A dual-compound (rear) and Avon’s Advanced Variable Belt Density (AVBD) provide tyre strength and stability when upright, so the tyre maintains its shape and in theory wears less in the centre on a harder compound. A softer compound on both sides (there’s quite a visible line where the compound changes actually) allows for softer feeling and a larger contact patch when you lean.
All of which is exactly what you’d expect from a dual-sport tyre: competent, not too noisy, sure-footed, confidence inspiring and well, grippy. The TrailRider does all that. The TrailRider is available in 18 sizes, though none for the KTM 950 and 990 Adventures. But it does include some cross-ply options. – Jonathan Pearson, BRAKE magazine

“We rode almost 200 miles on big adventure bikes across a variety of road types during the day-long launch, where the TrailRiders performed extremely well. We didn’t venture off the Tarmac, but we did take in some autobahns to confirm that even in excess of 120mph, stability and predictability is superb. Outright grip was balanced, which allowed for a high angle of lean – in terms of feel, it was certainly on a par with many sportsbike tyres.
There were no signs of wear on the centre of the tread after our day of testing (high speeds for so long would normally show small tears in the centre tread, but none were visible on the TrailRider). I did have one moment with the TrailRider that showed how composed the rubber is – I turned into a long left hander, crossing over a wide strip of over-banding and the tyres slid for a fraction of a second before instantly composing themselves.
With the feedback and stability on offer, first impressions are that the TrailRider is a confidence-inspiring tyre for the road-based adventurer.” – Tony Carter, Motorcycle Sport & Leisure

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US
I wasn't sure the size inner tubes I needed, so rang. They were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me the information I needed. Within 5 minutes I had got my answers, tubes ordered, paid and receipted - wow. I am usually cautious about using someone for first time, and not local (I live in Notts). I do recommend Two Tyres. Great job guys.
Called up and was able to get an appointment for the same day to replace both tyres on my BMW R1200 GSA. Not only was it great to get seen so quickly, compared to the 5 week wait I had been quoted by Motorrad, but Chris was able to offer some advice and guidance on which tyres best suited my needs. I cannot praise the service enough from Chris and the team and I will definitely be back for my next set of tyres!
Great service from these guys, I ordered on line and accidentally ordered two items the same, maybe clicked twice waiting for the page to change. They called me to check this wasn't a mistake (which it was) and immediately refunded me for the accidental purchase and sent out just one item. I know I'll be using them to get my tyres & tubes in future.
