Royal Enfield Himalayan Tyre Guide – 411, 450 and 650

Tyre sizes, the best tyre options, tyre pressures, reviews and more for the basic but brilliant Royal Enfield 650.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Tyre Size

Royal Enfield’s Himalayan comes in a few different flavours. The original air-cooled single cylinder 411 and then the slightly spicier water-cooled 450. And there’s also the twin-cylinder air-cooled 650.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 and 650 run a 90/90/21 front tyre and a 120/90/17 rear tyre.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 runs the same 90/90/21 front tyre but the slightly wider 140/80/17 rear tyre.

You can click those links to see all the different tyre options for this bike.

Here at Two Tyres we’re motorcycle tyre specialists and can supply any tyre to you by mail order. Or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

One of the great things Royal Enfield have done with the Himalayan is equip it with a 21″ front wheel, which is the same size as used on off-road and Enduro bikes – meaning you can fit some excellent knobbly tyres if you want to go properly off-road.

Royal Enfield Himalayan History

It was never designed for the European market but Royal Enfield have found a cult following with the Himalayan.

Using a basic 410cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, the Himalayan has struck a chord with bikers who want an adventure bike but don’t want a £15k price-tag, cruise control or adaptive suspension. They want to take it back to basics.

With just 26bhp to play with, the original Himalayan is a great platform on which you can improve not only the bike but your riding too.

The later models, the liquid-cooled 450 and the parallel-twin 650 still retain the back-to-basics appeal but with a little more shove.

The engine on the 450 is derived from the Sherpa and packs a few more bhp. Despite the power increase and 2kg weight saving, we get the feeling from speaking with customers that those intent on finding the brownest green lanes are perfectly happy with the original 411.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Stock Tyres

The UK and European versions of the Himalayan came fitted with Pirelli MT60 tyres as standard but we have seen a couple in our workshop with CEAT tyres too.

For a budget bike, the Pirellis are actually good-quality tyres. They’re not the best for pure road riders nor are they all that off-road capable but they’re a happy middle-ground.

Depending on whether you’re a tarmac fan or you like getting dirty, there’s a different path you can take and better tyres you can fit.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Best Tyres

The stock Pirellis are good tyres, well suited to UK roads and a light bit of off-roading.

However, some Himalayan riders won’t ever stray off-road and others will want something more off-road capable, so here are our top picks.

Pure Road

Avon Roadrider Mk 2 – Popular with modern classic riders but the Himalayan owners also rate them as they have good road manners and return decent mileage.

Bridgestone BT46 – Another good no-nonsense road tyre.

Continental Trail Attack 3 – Our most popular Adventure tyre for road riders

Dual Purpose

Anlas Capra R

Avon Trailrider – Our most popular tyre for road-riding trail hunters.

Continental ContiEscape

Pirelli MT90 A/T – A more purposeful version of the stock tyre.

Off-Road

Bridgestone AX41 – Very capable off-road tyre

Continental TKC80 – A brilliant off-road capable tyre

Pirelli MT21 Rallycross – An excellent Enduro-style tyre

Don’t forget your inner tubes

There are essentially three different types of motorcycle inner tube: Road, Reinforced and Heavy-Duty.

For the majority of riders, Road is all you need. If you are worried about punctures, just keep on top of your pressures and you’ll be fine. Most punctures come from the tube being nipped between the rim and the tyre, due to under-inflation and not from a sharp object penetrating the tyre and inner tube.

If you’re mainly riding off-road and keeping speeds under 50mph, then you can consider a Reinforced tube. These are popular with MX and Enduro riders. If you use your Adventure or Trail bike more off-road than you do on, then a reinforced tube is worth a look.

If you’re only riding off-road, i.e. competing in an Enduro then you can consider Heavy Duty tubes. These are not safe to fit to road bikes or bikes riding at constant speeds above 40mph. Heavy Duty tubes weight over 1.5kg per tube (as opposed to around 400g for a regular tube). They get hot and can fail due to excess heat. So fitting a set to decrease your chances of getting a puncture is counter-productive.

Are your tyre pressures letting you down?

We couldn’t find a tyre pressure gauge that was well-built, easy to get on-and-off the valve without pressure loss and could stand up to day-to-day abuse in our workshop. So we found a manufacturer to build one to our exacting standards.

We’re confident this is the best motorcycle pressure gauge out there. That’s why it comes with a 3-year, no-nonsense, money back guarantee.

Whether you want a digital tyre pressure gauge or a good old-fashioned analogue pressure gauge, we’ve got a gauge for you. Now you can quickly and easily check your pressures, to keep your bike handling well and to ensure you stay safe.
