Description
The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Michelin Road 5
What is it: Michelin’s premium sports touring tyre is the latest in a long line of their Road series. Dropping the word Pilot from their name but they’re even better at flying down A roads and motorways than the Pilot Road 4. Michelin have hit the bullseye with the Road 5. It’s available as the regular tyre, with sizes that cover most bikes but there’s also the Road 5 Trail which is made in sizes more commonly seen on Adventure bikes and the Road 5 GT which is a stiffer tyre, designed for heavyweight tourers.
If we could only use one word to sum up the Michelin Road 5 is it this: confidence. The tyre has a unique tread pattern and a soft carcass which enables it to warm-up quickly and provide grip from the word go. It is one of the best tyres on the market when it comes to dealing with rain and it also offers decent mileage – we’ve seen customers get between 4,000 and 12,000 miles from theirs – so it’s no wonder it’s the go-to tyre for a wide variety of bikers.
It’s a real world tyre that can cope with everything the UK weather can throw at you. It’ll also deal with our varied road conditions; gravel, overbanding, white lines, manhole covers and pot holes. None of these will phase the Road 5.
What tyre it replaces: The Road 5 replaces the Pilot Road 4 and was introduced in 2018.
Who is it aimed at: Equally at home on an R1 as it is on an R1200RT. If you aren’t bothered about racetrack looks but you want real world performance, the Road 5 is a great option. Neutral handling, amazing wet weather performance and good longevity, it’s no wonder this is one of the best-selling tyres in the UK right now.
Typically seen on: A wide range of bikes that get ridden all year ’round in all conditions. From the BMW F900XR, Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX and BMW R1250RT to an MT-07 and Honda Fireblade.
Road 5 highlights: Incredible wet-weather performance. Rapid warm-up times due to the high silica content.
Road 5 tyre sizes: All 17″ sizes, with three different front tyre sizes and seven different rears, going all the way up to a 190/55 ZR17.
A more extreme option: The Power 5 is a better option if you like to ride when the sun’s out or if you’re a Sportsbike rider after optimum handing response.
A budget-conscious option: The Pilot Road 2 might be an older tyre now but Michelin still produce this tyre due to its loyal following. It’s a great tyre and exceptional value for money.
The competition: This is premium tyre territory and the big guns are out. The Michelin goes up against the Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE, the Pirelli Angel GT2 and the Bridgestone T32.
Michelin says
- A new benchmark in wet weather performance for the sport touring market.
- Amazing stopping performance, with a 50% worn tyre achieving the same braking distance as a brand new Pilot Road 4 in testing.
- Excellent durability for many miles of happy riding.
Press Review
“And after 3000 miles of motorways, back roads and urban exploring on my Suzuki SV650X, I’m pleased to say they offer loads of confidence when cornering and braking in the wet, as well as ample toe-dragging grip in the dry. This is due to clever dual-compound technology which uses a harder centre for longevity and softer shoulders for sporty cornering grip.” – Dan Sutherland, MCN
Difference between a Road 5 and Road 5 Trail
The only difference on the Road 5 Trail is the ‘trail’ written on the side wall. The 110/80/19 and 150/70/17 are V rated whilst the 150/70/17 Road 5 is a ‘Z’. Road 4 Trail on the way out, there aren’t many left in the 120/70/19 + 170/60/17. The Road 5 is a much nicer tyre than the 4 it turns quicker and is so much better in the wet and dry than the 4. The 4 wasn’t a very good replacement to the 3 which lots of customers preferred particularly in the wet.
Michelin Says
Using the latest combined technologies of MICHELIN 2CT and 2CT+ and the latest generation of compounds and siped tread, MICHELIN Road 5 tyres offer you the best wet grip versus its main competitors* without compromise on dry roads.**

Motorcycle Press Reviews
“The Michelin Road 5 offers ample real-world wet and dry performance. Although it easily coped with track riding element of the day, it’s less suited to this role and riders wanting to scratch that trackday itch should look elsewhere.” – MCN

“Impressed, I was, as I whacked open the throttle for another corner exit one afternoon at Rockingham Motor Race Track Speed Drome. Impressed because the tyres gently melting below weren’t racing slicks. They were simple sport touring things. Remember the Pilot Road 3s? They were the first Michelins to incorporate sipes, those tiny lines in the tyre tread.
Two generations on, and the design has evolved. They’ve toned down the siping (not a real word) to increase rigidity, and pulled the tread away from the tyre wall. This means better grip and firmer feel at deep lean. No sign of the early squaring off the 3s were infamous for, either. Simple sport touring things? Not so simple after all.” – BIKE magazine
—
“The Michelins only gave any indication of letting go when I was riding harder than most people would on the road. The fact that I could even do this is testament to how well it will perform in normal riding conditions. If you’are looking for a fast road tyre, with more of a focus on track, check out the Michelin RS but for a tyre aimed at the road rider, the Road 5s had more than enough grip, both in the wet and dry. While time will tell for longevity – and we welcome your comments below – this is smooth, predictable rubber.” – Bennetts
—
“In all honesty, I’m not the biggest fan of the wet but the 5s did give me the confidence to ride faster than I normally would on road rubber. They felt instantly grippy and offered a surprisingly positive amount of feedback for a tyre that’s arguably pretty hard-wearing and built for distance above all. The new tread design does wonders for firing the water out of the way, and even on the high speed slalom the Road 5s gripped impressively well, while still offering a level of flick-ability you’d expect from a much sportier tyre.”
“Thanks to the latest gen compounds, there was astounding amounts of feel on the edge of the tyres. As the roads became twistier the Michelin’s kept on taking every single ounce of abuse I could throw until the MT07’s softly damped suspension was screaming ‘no more.”
After a quick coffee stop it was time for a change, in the shape of Aprilia’s big Tuono V4, and big inputs of the throttle would start to see the traction control kick in.Summing up, Carl says:“Despite being plastered with new tech, pleasantly rolling profiles and cleverly shaped sipes, the Michelin Road 5s were never made for setting lap records, but to give a predictable and long lasting road-friendly riding experience which is exactly what they do.” – Carl Stevens, Fast Bikes.
Michelin Road 5 versus the rivals
michelin road 5 vs bridgestone t31
Bridgestone’s T31 is the replacement for the popular T30 EVO. It’s a very popular tyre Touring and commuters love it for the mileage it returns.
michelin road 5 vs pilot road 4
Guess what tyre the Pilot Road 4 replaced? Easy eh. The Road 4 was claimed to have 20% more mileage than the Road 3, this was certainly true for the front tyre but it didn’t quite have the performance in the wet as the Road 3 front. Also available in GT spec fitments for the over weight bikes out there.
michelin road 5 vs bridgestone s22
The S22 is Bridgestone’s tyre for Sportsbikes and fast road riders. It takes over from the S21 and offers superb outright grip, fast warm up and good wet weather performance.
michelin road 5 vs dunlop roadsmart 3
Released in 2016 the Dunlop Roadsmart 3 has become very popular over the last few years. It replaced the Roadsmart 2, it offers class leading agility, wet weather performance and a claimed 44% increase in mileage over it’s prtedessor. The tyre is also available in an SP version which is designed with lighter weight bikes in mind. Give us a buzz to confirm what variation is suitable for you.
michelin road 5 vs power rs
Now discontinued, the Power RS was Michelin’s super sticky tyres for fast road riding. It has been replaced by the new Power 5.
michelin road 5 vs road 5 gt
The GT fitment is for heavyweight bikes, like the big tourers. A strengthened rear tyre will cope with a rider, pillion and kitchen sink combo.
michelin road 5 vs power 5
A direct replacement for the Power RS, the Power 5 is designed for fast road riding. It has a very low (11%) void ratio meaning there’s maximum amount of rubber in contact with the road but with additional silica you won’t get caught out if it rains. If you’re running a sportsbike, these are well worth a look.
michelin road 5 vs road 5 trail
The Road 5 but in Trail bike sizes. Michelin’s most popular road tyre is an excellent choice for Adventure bikers who rarely stray off the black stuff. They don’t have that knobbly adventure-ready look but they do have bags of grip, wet weather performance and durability.
michelin road 5 vs pirelli angel gt 2
Pirelli’s latest touring tyre, takes over from where the popular Angel GT left off. A dual compound rear, with softer shoulders for more edge grip but a harder central compound for maximum mileage. Borrows from Pirelli’s track rain tyre tread pattern for better wet-weather grip ‘A’ fitment is for heavier bikes.
michelin road 5 vs metzeler roadtec 01
MCN’s tyre of the year in 2016 and 2017. A new generation of tyre that can do it all, the Roadtec 01 is one of those tyres that’s at home on pretty much any bike, from superbikes to tourers. It is a fantastic road tyre, thanks to it quick warm-up and long life.
michelin road 5 trail vs tourance next
The Tourance Next was the replacement for the Tourance EXP which superseeded the classic original Tournace. These have never had the appeal of the original, we think partly because of the more road oriented tread pattern.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US
I wasn't sure the size inner tubes I needed, so rang. They were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me the information I needed. Within 5 minutes I had got my answers, tubes ordered, paid and receipted - wow. I am usually cautious about using someone for first time, and not local (I live in Notts). I do recommend Two Tyres. Great job guys.
Called up and was able to get an appointment for the same day to replace both tyres on my BMW R1200 GSA. Not only was it great to get seen so quickly, compared to the 5 week wait I had been quoted by Motorrad, but Chris was able to offer some advice and guidance on which tyres best suited my needs. I cannot praise the service enough from Chris and the team and I will definitely be back for my next set of tyres!
Great service from these guys, I ordered on line and accidentally ordered two items the same, maybe clicked twice waiting for the page to change. They called me to check this wasn't a mistake (which it was) and immediately refunded me for the accidental purchase and sent out just one item. I know I'll be using them to get my tyres & tubes in future.
