Michelin Pilot Road 4 & Road 4 GT

5 reviews

Guess what tyre the Pilot Road 4 replaced? Easy eh. The Road 4 was claimed to have 20% more mileage than the Road 3, this was certainly true for the front tyre but it didn't quite have the performance in the wet as the Road 3 front. Also available in GT spec fitments for the heavyweight bikes out there.

Description

Last for 20% longer*

  • Thanks to 2CT technology with brand new tread compounds and a redesigned tread pattern, MICHELIN Pilot Road 4 tyres last on average 20% longer than MICHELIN Pilot Road 3 tyres. These tyres feature chamfered sipe edges that help prevent abnormal wear in extreme conditions and under heavy braking.

Shorter braking distances on wet surfaces

  • Thanks to their new XST+ sipe technology, MICHELIN Pilot Road4 tyres reduce braking distances on wet roads and very slippery surfaces like white lines and pedestrian crossings. The result is a safer, more reassuring ride.

Excellent grip

  • MICHELIN Pilot Road 4 tyres provide optimal grip when cornering because of their patented tread pattern and specific tread compounds.
Tread grooving and siping also increase their ability to clear water.

* According to an internal study conducted in 2013 with 120/70 ZR17 (front) and 180/55/ZR17 (rear).

Press Reviews

“I’ve used them for about 11 months and 3,000 miles, purely commuting in town and on the motorway. Hence the corwardy-custard unworn edges. I think they have performed slightly better than the old ones [Dunlop Sportmax]. With no fancy traction control, it’s quite possible to accidentally spin and slide the rear on the SV at a moderate lean angle, on a damp slip road entering the motorway for example. I haven’t experienced that on these Michelins though. In fact in those nine months and 3,000 miles, in all sorts of conditions, they have never caused me a moment of doubt.” – Visordown

“Part of the Pilot Road 4’s wet weather capability comes from the distinctive ‘sipes’ or light grooves which run across the tyres. These grooves, which are a patented design, were seen on the previous Pilot Road 3s and slice through the surface water making it, according to the manufacturer, 17% better than its nearest competitor when it comes to wet weather braking.

Across the day we rode a wide variety of bikes fitted with the new Michelins, from the hooliganistic KTM Duke 690 to Triumph’s 300kg plus Trophy SE. After a day’s riding, it was hard not to be impressed with the French manufacturer’s latest product but, of course, the true test of a tyre comes from using them day-in, day-out over a prolonged period.

Michelin claim that their tyre has been tested over 2,000,000 kilometres and should deliver around 20% more longevity than the outgoing Pilot Road 3s.” – Bennetts

“These tyres actually make riding a motorcycle in winter fun. Developed as Michelin’s sport-touring tyre, they work brilliantly in the situations where sporty rubber begins to suffer – in the cool, in the damp and in the wet. The PR4s have a reputation for being the best road tyres in the wet and I’ve been amazed with how they perform on the ZX-10R. No wheelspin, no slides – just drive and corner speed through the puddles that simply baffles the mind. What makes them work well on the ZX-10R is their profile. Michelin developed the 190/55 ZR17 version with modern sportsbikes in mind, and the round, rather than flat (like many tour tyres’ profile) means they steer well, with a lovely neutral feel mid-corner, and hold a line well. Dry running has been limited, but I reckon they’ve certainly got enough grip for all but the fastest of fast road riding. Very impressive.” – Performance Bikes

Customer Reviews

“I’ve been riding the P4 as a factory mount on my BMW R1200R LC. I usually do 60% riding in mountain roads (lucky to live in the Canary Islands) very often in wet roads (yes the centre of the island can be very humid for winter months) and the rest on highway/ urban traffic. It took me some time to get used to the feeling specially in wet conditions but with the time I won confidence and now I got used in the way the tyres convey the not always regular condition of local roads. When pushing the bike in road mountains the tyres will usually let you know in a very progressive way you are reaching its limit, almost in a pleasant way where you can start feeling the back drifting away and as you pull the throttle. As a next mount I am wondering whether to sacrifice some durability to win quicker response?” – Pancho

Pilot Road 4 versus its rivals

michelin pilot road 4 vs dunlop roadsmart 2
Based on the original Roadsmart the Roadsmart 2 improves what was already a great Sport Touring tyre, now replaced by the Roadsmart 3 it’s still is a popular choice with riders of mid range bikes.

michelin pilot road 4 standard vs gt
The GT is designed for heavier bikes. It featured a strengthened carcass on the rear tyre to cope with the load. It is a common misconception that fitting this to any bike gives you longer tyre life. It won’t.

michelin pilot road 4 gt vs road 5
Dropping the word Pilot from the name but the Road 5 is the evolution of Michelin’s most popular road tyre. Its distinctive Sipes technology helps make this a brilliant tyre in the wet while its fast warm up and edge grip are what makes it a firm favourite. Available in GT spec for heavy tourers and Trail for Adventure bike wheel sizes.

michelin pilot road 4 vs pirelli angel gt
The GT is Pirelli’s evolution of the popular ST. A touring tyre with a sporty edge, thanks to its bi-compound design, with a soft shoulder for better edge grip and a harder central compound for increased mileage. ‘A’ fitment is a 2-ply stiffer carcass for heavier bikes.

michelin pilot road 4 vs bridgestone bt023
The BT023 is Bridgestone’s budget Sports Touring tyre, it was introduced as the replacement for the incredibly popular BT021. This one offers great mileageage and wet weather performance at a great price.

metzeler z8 interact vs michelin pilot road 4
A great tyre for road riders and it arguably had its crown pinched by Metzeler’s newer Roadtec 01. Despite that, the Z8 is still in production as it’s a popular tyre. If you rider a sportsbike or supernaked it’s a top choice and offers great handling and wet weather prowess.

michelin pilot road 4 vs metzeler roadtec 01
MCN’s tyre of the year in 2016 and 2017. A new generation of tyre that can do it all, the Roadtec 01 is one of those tyres that’s at home on pretty much any bike, from superbikes to tourers. It is a fantastic road tyre, thanks to it quick warm-up and long life.

bridgestone t30 evo vs michelin pilot road 4
With it’s 3 layer compound technology the T30 evo improved the already great weather performance of the T30 whilst also increasing it’s mileage, another positive is the tyres turn in was also improved.

Pilot Road 4

Tyres are really good in general use. However, you need to be careful for the first hundred miles or so as the tread has little grip (wet or dry) until roughed up.
On tyre life I got about the same life as PR3s when Michelin advertise it should be more.

Sprint ST

I've got these fitted to a 2009 Triumph Sprint St 1050 so it's a heavier sport tourer. Unusually, most of the 2000+ miles I've covered this year have been in the wet (including several hundred miles in extreme wet) and I never once had any loss of confidence in these tyres - they were very much planted and while the guys around me in the group were having moments on other tyres I never felt anything other than a solid and predictable level of grip. The dry level grip exceeds my capability / confidence but I've yet to have any cause for concern. After 2000ish miles the tyres show minimal signs of wear.

Easy to work with.

I received 2 tyres from these guys and they came to Northern Ireland fairly quick, small hold up but not the firms fault, they where very quick to sort it out and no problem talking to them, the price was the best i could get and i am more than happy with the firm, i will have no problem buying from TwoTyres again, and i would like to thank them for there help, well pleased.

Michelin Road p4

Brilliant tyres had them on both my kawasaki er6f and now on my second set on my kawasaki z1000sx, good all round goo even wearing tyres ideal for commuting and pleasure, these tyres stick like..... To a blanket, ideal in all weather', I have just had to commute in the snow and ice again 5th year in a row and had no issues at all with them, highly recommend these tyres. No the cheapest but not the most expensive for a good around tyre well worth what I pay for them.

Cracking wet weather grip!

I was running Road 2's on my last bike and when I bought my Z1000SX I put a pair of these Road 4's on. They heat up quickly, the front has lots of feel and they'regreat in the wet. I'll go for another set of these or the Road 5s next.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

5 Stars

I wasn't sure the size inner tubes I needed, so rang. They were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me the information I needed. Within 5 minutes I had got my answers, tubes ordered, paid and receipted - wow. I am usually cautious about using someone for first time, and not local (I live in Notts). I do recommend Two Tyres. Great job guys.

Called up and was able to get an appointment for the same day to replace both tyres on my BMW R1200 GSA. Not only was it great to get seen so quickly, compared to the 5 week wait I had been quoted by Motorrad, but Chris was able to offer some advice and guidance on which tyres best suited my needs. I cannot praise the service enough from Chris and the team and I will definitely be back for my next set of tyres!

5 Stars

Great service from these guys, I ordered on line and accidentally ordered two items the same, maybe clicked twice waiting for the page to change. They called me to check this wasn't a mistake (which it was) and immediately refunded me for the accidental purchase and sent out just one item. I know I'll be using them to get my tyres & tubes in future.
