Metzeler Sportec M7RR
Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the popular Sportec M5, the M7RR is a truly do-it-all sports tyre for riders who use their bikes in all conditions. We've trackdayed them, ridden them through downpours and commuted on them. The M7 is a great choice for fast road riders.

The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Metzeler M7RR
What is it: When it was introduced in 2014, the M7RR was Metzeler’s top-spec sports tyre but it has been superceded by the M9RR in 2020. To say the M7RR is track capable is an understatement; Michael Rutter managed a 120mph average lap at the TT on a stock GSX-R1000R on M7RRs as part of a magazine feature. Incredible! However the M7s race-potential slightly masks the fact this is a truly do-it-all road tyre that can handle wet weather, cold days and big miles.
What tyre it replaces: The M7RR replaced the Sportec M5 when it was launched in 2014.
Who is it aimed at: This is a real world sports tyre that’s a perfect fit for road riders like that like to explore their bike’s limits in safety and comfort. The M7 is a great all weather option and now even better value for money since the M9RR is on the scene.
Typically seen on: All manner of road bikes, from a Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX and Suzuki GSX-750S to a Ducati Hypermotard and Honda CB650F, plus any sportsbike you can think of, from a Yamaha R6 to a BMW S1000RR.
M7RR highlights: Easily one of the best value for money sports tyres on the market. Fast warm up and great in cold and wet conditions. Superb high speed stability.
M7RR sizes: The M7RR is only produced in 17″ sizes but caters for pretty much every road bike relased in the past 20 years.
A sportier option: The M9 RR replaced the M7RR and is slightly more capable on track but both are great road tyres. For even more track-focus try the Metzeler Racetec RR K3
A cheaper option: The Metzeler Sportec M5 is still available but having been launched in 2010, it’s using much older technology. A more road focused option is the Z8 Interact.
The competition: The M7RR faces keen competition from the likes of the Pirelli Diablo Rosso 3, Michelin Power 2CT, Bridgestone S21 and Dunlop Sportsmart Mk3.

Press Reviews
“I’m the first to admit I hate riding in the wet on anything other than full race wets. The sublime throttle control and botty grip-detection device simply isn’t in my locker.
Then I saw Jurgen Fuchs (BMW test rider and ex-GP racer) and an American dude giving it the berries out on track, kneedown for most of Almeria’s swooping curves. And we’re not just talking damp patches – it was pissing down, with standing water in many places.
Jurgen gave a friendly tap on his seat unit for a tow and I duly obliged. I adopted the ‘if he can do it, so can I’ mantra, and I didn’t crash. Sure, the immense mechanical grip of the 2015 Beemer and its semi-active suspension complimented the M7RRs, but it was the tyres that had the final say – I’ve never experienced grip and response from a set of tyres in the wet, and the brain took some recalibration in order to fathom real-time activity.
Having grip is one thing. Boasting feedback to work alongside that grip is also hugely important in iffy conditions. The RRs heat up very quickly (even in the wet) and offer immediate confidence to push on.” – 44Teeth

“For street riding at a sporting pace, every characteristic I liked about the M7s in the wet is true – only more so. Turn-in is quick and neutral, with the bike going from straight up to full lean – or anywhere in between – in an instant. Since street riding is a constant management of unknowns, the tires didn’t complain a bit at being asked to alter lines mid-corner. When standing the bike up and tossing it back over to avoid rocks encountered on blind curves, the M7s remained unflappable. They traversed sand easily with little slip. I can’t comment on the longevity, but Metzeler claims a 20% increase in mileage over the M5 Interacts. More mileage is always welcome!” – Motorcycle.com

“If you look very closely you may just detect an ever-so-slight squaring off of my KTM’s rear Metzeler M7 RR, but only just. 3000 miles of traipsing into work, touring and track sessions have done little to torture the tread of these excellent all-rounders; a wonderful side effect of the KTM being both lightweight and low powered. The M7 RR’s also play a major part in the RC390’s competence in autumn conditions – they’re extremely confidence inspiring.”- Emma Franklin, Motorcycle News

“After 300 miles, with life left but handling starting to go off, a pair of Metzeler Sportec M7 RRs went on. ‘I liked the Metzelers, they gave me more confidence,’ says Hugo. I did the big European trip on them and felt very comfortable. Had to swap them because they picked up a huge nail.
A pair of Dunlop RoadSmarts have just been fitted, but it’s too early to pass judgement. It’s been wet and slimy the whole time so far.” – Hugo Wilson, Bike Magazine

“My head wasn’t right, so something more confidence inspiring was needed” says Paul. “Metzeler’s M7 RRs claim to have sporty handling, grip in all conditions and suffer 20% less wear than the earlier Sportec M5s. First impressions are very good: I feel I can push harder and they turn a little bit quicker. Fine nuances of grip and feel are for racers but as a bloke on the street they inspire confidence and my head’s back in the game. How long will they last? Time will tell.”– Paul Lang, Shapes and Colours, BIKE Magazine

“These are a sportier tyre, giving the Suzuki a little more desire to change direction and more dry grip than you ever need on the road. Work in the wet too. The payoff is a slightly firmer ride and, on the very odd occasion, a slight sense of movement from the bars when accelerating hard in low gears over bumps.” – Bike Magazine

“These have been on my R1 for the last 3000 miles during which they’ve done everything I could have asked of a tyre.
They are nimble and sweet-steering – rolling over better than the Dunlop GP Racer track tyres that replaced them – and deliver a huge amount of grip for something that is really only a sporty road tyre.
The front has great feel, while the rear has so much traction that in 3000 miles of pretty hard road riding I haven’t had a single slide. They work very well from cold and perform brilliantly in the wet, too.
Best of all is the mileage. The front looks untouched, while the rear has worn evenly. last year I managed 5000 miles from a rear M7RR on my S1000R. Unless you’re lapping at the front of a very fast trackday, these tyres are all you need.” – Performance Bikes magazine, editor Matt Wildee

“These have been my go-to tyre for my own road bikes since their inception and I knew they were capable of trackday fun, as well as coping with downpours. From early August to around mid-November, I piled on around 4000 miles on these tyres, snatching the last of the year’s trackday excursions at Cadwell Park.
As a tyre designed for fast, sporty road riding, the M7RRs blew me away when the temperatures dropped, still offering huge feedback below 10-degrees in all conditions. Had they not squared, I would have been happy to run them through the winter. However, with the middle band of tread dwindling on the rear, I decided to swap them out for a set of Metzeler Roadtec 01s.” Dan Sutherland, MCN
