Triumph Bonneville History
The Bonneville has been around so long, it was launched before the wheel was even invented (well, 1959 but that’s close enough). Triumph’s first one was the T120 and then in the mid 70s came the T140 which Triumph stopped producing in 1983 (mainly due to the fact the Meridan plant shut down when Triumph went bust).
When John Bloor took over Triumph, they re-launched the Bonneville 800 in 2001 but only the old boys were interested and most of them had hung their leathers up years ago.
Triumph persisted with the model and it was released in loads of different versions including the Bonneville SE, T100, the 865cc Thruxton Scrambler, America and Speedmaster. All different versions that capitalised on the growing desire for Retro motorcycles.
Time has been kind to the Bonneville marque as Retro bikes are now all the rage and the Bonneville is one of Triumph’s most popular models.
The modern-modern Bonnevilles are now powered by a 1200cc engine and feature better quality suspension and brakes. They’re a pack of wolves in various sheep-based guises and excellent road bikes for gentlemen who are done with the crazy world of Superbikes but still like to don a Barbour jacket and brown boots and take on the twisties.
