Suzuki GSX-R1000 Tyre Guide

Tyre sizes, the best tyre options, tyre pressures, reviews and more for the mighty Suzuki GSX-R1000 series.

Suzuki GSX-R1000 Tyre Size

The Suzuki GSX-R1000 has run a couple of different tyre sizes over the years.

The 2001 to 2016 models run a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 190/50/17 rear tyre.

The 2017 – onwards models run a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 190/55/17 rear tyre.

You can click those links to see all the different tyre options for this bike. As motorcycle tyre specialists, accredited by the major manufacturers, we can supply any tyre to you by mail order or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

These are common motorcycle tyre sizes and so you have plenty of choice, whether you want a tyre for Touring, Trackdays, Fast Road Riding, Wet Weather or High Mileage.

Suzuki GSX-R1000 History

What a bike the original GSX-R1000 was. Launched in 2001, it knocked spots off the competition and it is hard to believe that Suzuki took so long to release the 1000, when the 600 and 750 versions had been seriously successful. Still, it was worth the wait.

Still in production today, despite the market shifting away from Sportsbikes, the GSX-R1000 is a belter but Suzuki haven’t raced in World Superbikes for a few seasons, so is the end nigh for the big Thou?

During its history the GSX-R1000 has had six revisions, making seven different versions in total. They ran from 2001 to 2002 (GSX-R1000 K1 and K2), then 2003 to 2004 (GSX-R1000 K3 and K4), then again from 2005 to 2006 (GSX-R1000 K5 and K6) which some fans of the brand claim was the best version and the bike that BMW based their S1000RR’s engine around.

Following that the GSX-R1000 had another model update in 2007 which ran to 2008 (GSX-R1000 K7 and K8) which ran twin pipes. Those twin pipes stayed for the 2009 to 2011 versions (GSX-R1000 K9 and L0). Another of the better models was the 2012 to 2016 version, which had a grunty engine, making it a great road bike but it lacked ABS and traction control, which might make it a desirable model in years to come when everything we do has to be approved by a computer.

Then Suzuki got its head back in the game and launched the GSX-R1000 (and later the GSX-R1000R) in 2017, which, for a short period of time, became the subject of hot debates as to whether it was the best litre-class Superbike. That was fairly quickly answered by both Kawasaki and Honda who launched new bikes that kept punters from the Suzuki dealerships.

The GSX-R1000 has come a long way since its launch 20 years ago. It’s a great value for money bonkers superbike, packing over 170bhp and loved by old school hooligans.

Suzuki GSX-R1000 Best Tyres

Although some are used for commuting, most GSX-R1000 riders tend to get their bikes out for sunny weekend blasts and the odd trackday, so here are some good recommendations:

Fast Road Riding

Bridgestone S23

Michelin Power 6

Metzeler M9RR

Trackday

Bridgestone RS11 (Sporty tyre you could ride to the track on with no issues and no need for warmers)

Continental Race Attack 2 Street (Decent road-legal track tyre)

Pirelli Supercorsa SC (The tyre used for most of the BSB support series, road legal but not a great choice for pure road riding)

You can also check out our guide to the best motorcycle trackday tyres for more in-depth options.

Suzuki GSX-R1000 Tyre Pressures

You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.

If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:

Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi

Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi

Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi

125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi

You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
