What is it: The Karoo 4 is an off-road capable tyre for Adventure bikes. It is used by the BMW Off-Road school which is a testament to its off-road ability, feel and feedback. Designed to be run at road pressures off-road, it’s an easy tyre to live with, just set your pressures and get riding. We spent a day riding on these tyres on the road and while they wouldn’t be our first choice if we were purely road riding, they’re not too bad.
What tyre it replaces: The Karoo 4 replaces the Karoo 3.
Who is it aimed at:Â These are designed to suit Adventure-bike riders who aim to regularly take their bike off-road or need a tyre that when they do go off-road, can handle challenging terrain.
Typically seen on: Any mid to large capacity Adventure bike, from a KTM Adventure R to a Tenere 700.
Karoo 4 highlights: Mud & Snow rated. Metzeler have worked on improving the mileage over the Karoo 3 too.
Karoo 3 sizes: 19″ and 21″ fronts and 17″ and 18″ rears, which means they’ll fit on pretty much any Adventure or Enduro bike.
A more road-focused option: If boggy steep tracks and chalky descents aren’t your thing then check out the Karoo Street which is a light trail tyre but has better road manners.
A more extreme option: If you’re going to be spending the majority of your time off -road, check out the Metzeler Enduro 3 Sahara.
The competition: Some good alternatives include the Continental TKC70 + TKC70 Rocks rear, the Anlas Capra X, the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR and the Dunlop Trailmax Mission.
