Can I run a 180/60 on an 5.5 inch rim

< 1 min read

Yes you can but you have to check clearance on the hugger.

This is a common question from owners of 600cc Supersport bikes like the Suzuki GSX-R600, Honda CBR600RR and Yamaha YZF-R6 and other bikes like the Triumph Street Triple 675.

The reason people do it is to get a higher tyre that helps the bike turn in and it also gives the rear tyre a larger contact patch.

The 180/60 option is far better than the alternative that people used to run (before a 180/60 was a commonly available fitment). The issue with a 190/55 is that it pulls the shape of the tyre out, as the 190 is designed for a 6-inch rim, so it was never the best solution.

Another small advantage of a 180/60 over the 55 is that you’ll get a tiny bit more tyre life. A 180/55 has a smaller rolling circumference, and it’ll take around 810 revolutions of the tyre to cover a mile, wheras with a 180/60 it’ll revolve 790 times per mile. So that’s approximately a 2% difference, which could equate to an additional 100 miles. Well, you did ask!

So a 180/60 instead of a 180/55 is a good option, just check your clearances.
