Every Motorcycle Tyre Size Available

There are almost 200 different sizes of motorcycle tyres out there and we’ve listed them all in this guide.

There are almost 200 different sizes of motorcycle tyres out there. However, we estimate that 90% of motorcycles produced today use just 25 of these sizes.

Scooters are slightly different and they range across a larger amount of tyre sizes due to the fact they come in far more shapes and sizes, often with the front and rear rims in different diameters.

The numbers aren’t as complicated as they first look. If your tyre says 120/70/17 58H on the sidewall that means:

  • 120 is the indication of the width of the tyre (in millimetres)
  • 70 indicates the aspect ratio (between height and width, i.e. it’s 70% as tall as it is wide in this case 84mm)
  • 17 is the diameter of the rim size (in inches)
  • 58 refers to the load index (236kg per tyre in this case)
  • H refers to the type speed rating (in this case 130mph/210kmh)

We’ve written an in-depth guide to your motorcycle tyre sizes so you can really get to grips with what all those numbers and letters mean.

The vast majority of larger motorcycles are fitted with a 120/70/17 front tyre and you’ll find that practically every manufacturer makes a road-going tyre in that size. We list over 150 different tyres available in that size.

Most bikes also have a 17-inch rear rim and the only real exception to this are bikes such as some Harley-Davidsons and a few of the older, more niche offerings. Adventure bikes tend to come with a 19-inch front tyre and proper off-road bikes (of the extreme versions of the Adventure bikes) are fitted with a 21-inch front rim but all Adventure bikes come with a 17-inch rear tyre.

Most scooters come with rims that are between 12 and 16 inches and generally speaking the smaller the engine size, the smaller the wheel size too but that’s not always the case. Some of the modern 125cc scooters come with 16-inch wheels front and back. You can click this link to see our guide to the best 125cc scooter tyres.

All motorcycle and scooter tyre sizes

The most common bike running a 14-incher is a Honda PCX125, 2010-2018, runs a 90/90/14 and 100/90/14 at the rear. The 2018 to 2020 model 100/80/14 and a 120/70/14 at the rear. Aprilia also makes the SR Motard 125 which runs 14-inch rims. Suzuki Address 110 which runs a set of 14s front and rear.

Honda X-Adv has a 15″ rear and a 17″ front.

Yamaha Niken runs a 17″ rear but two 15″ fronts. The 15 inch tyres you put on a Tmax 500 are H rated and so you can’t run these on the Niken as it needs a V-rated tyre. Bridgestone are the OE tyre supplier for the Niken and at the moment the only tyre you can run is the Bridgestone A41 and while other tyres will fit you won’t get a matching set of 15 and 17s.

16 inch rim

The 16-inch tyre was supplied on motorcycles back in the day, bikes like the Ducati Paso run a 130/60/16 front and 160/60/16 and getting tyres for this bike these days is really hard. Honda ran the Fireblade and Hornet 600 of the early 90s with a 16-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear which was controversial, especially when tyre manufacturers tailed off their 16-inch motorcycle tyre production. Harley Soft Tail Fat Bob runs a 16-inch wheel front and rear.

Another bike of note is the Ducati Desmosedici D16RR which runs a 16-inch rear wheel (a 200/55/16 to be precise) and that 16-inch rear severely limited the Desmo’s tyre choice which is a shame, considering how expensive the bike is and how it’s meant to be used on the track.

Scooterwise, the 16-incher is a common fitment. Bikes like the Honda SH125i and SH300i run a 16-inch front and rear. The NSC110 Vision runs a 80/90/16 front and a 14-inch rear.

16.5 inch rim

The sixteen point five incher, was the preserve of the racing bike. For years GP bikes and World Superbikes all came ran 16.5 inch tyres and us mere mortals would swap out our  17-inch road rims and fit 16.5 inch ones in order to run the ‘stickiest’ track tyres.

The only bikes that now run a 16.5 are Supermotos. The tyre manufacturers pretty much only make tyres in this size for Supermoto racers. Michelin do a Power Supermoto 120/80/16.5 and Metzeler do a 125/75/16.5 front tyre. These are purely for Supermoto racing or trackdays.

18 inch rim

Honda CB125F 2015 to current runs an 80/100/18 front and 90/90/18 rear. Pan European ST1100 and ST1300 both run an 18 inch front. Other notable bikes over the years are the TDM850 and 900. Pictured above is a Ducati Scrambler and these run an 18-inch front. Yamaha’s 2007 to 2017 YBR125 ran an 18-inch front.

The 18-inch front makes the bike turn a bit slower but that in turn keeps the bike stable and stops it being twitchy.

These days, there are a decent amount of tyres available in the 18-inch size. A decade ago you wouldn’t have had such a lot of choice but with the rise of bikes like the Scrambler there are some options out there.

19 inch rim

Almost all Adventure bikes come with a 19-inch front wheel as standard. Fortunately all the major tyre manufacturers produce decent rubber in this size so you’re spoilt for choice.

Dunlop produce a DT3 tyre which is pretty much the only commercially available tyre that comes in both a 19-inch front and rear size, which is designed for flat-track racing.

21 inch rim

The 21-incher is the preserve of the proper off-road bike. The Triumph Scrambler 1200XC pictured above is a good example, just look how big that 21-inch front tyre is! You can pretty much only get 21-inch motorcycle tyres with off-road bias, there are no real pure road contenders, which isn’t a surprise, as no-one in their right mind would buy a bike with a 21-inch front wheel if they were only riding on tarmac.
