BMW R1200RT History
The RT model has been in production since just after the wheel was invented. (Well, strictly speaking, 1995, when the R1100RT was launched).
The new R1250RT takes over from the incredibly popular R1200RT. The R1200 was introduced in 2005 and took over from the R1150RT. The first model ran from 2005 to 2009 and then was replaced with the second generation with the Twin-Cam engine in 2009 to 2013. The SE version came with a heated seat, electronic adjustable suspension, heated grip and you could spec-up a radio too. Then came the revised shape in 2014, which ran to 2019. It had a partially water-cooled engine, power was up from 110bhp to 120bhp and it featured the all-new fairing with smaller mirrors, electric screen was standard. Following that, the R1250RT was introduced in 2019 and it too continues to benefit from updates to keep the RT as the leading premium sports-tourer on the market.

BMW R1200RT / R1250RT Stock Tyres
The R1250RT comes on Metzeler Roadtec Z8 tyres. These are top quality sports-touring tyres and many owners stick with these.
BMW R1200RT Best Tyres
Some other good options for BMW’s super tourer: Bridgestone T31, Continental Road Attack 3 or the Michelin Pilot Road 4
Even though some tyre manufacturers make heavyweight tyres (called things like GT and HWM) the RT doesn’t need these tyre versions. Contrary to the myth; fitting a heavyweight rear tyre isn’t a good idea. Some riders think that’s a good way of getting more miles from your rear but the fact is the tyre itself is stiffer and just won’t give the same feel or performance as a regular tyre as it won’t get worked in the way it’s designed to be.
BMW R1200RT Tyre Pressures
You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.
If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:
Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi
Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi
Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi
125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi
You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
