Triumph Speed Triple Tyre Guide

Tyre sizes, the best tyre options, tyre pressures, reviews and more for the mighty Triumph Speed Triple series.

Triumph Speed Triple Tyre Size

The original 1994 Speed Triple ran a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 180/55/17 rear tyre this sizing stayed with the bike all the way up to 2010.

The modern versions of the Speed Triple R, Speed Triple RR and the Speed Triple RS run a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 190/55/17 rear tyre.

You can click those links to see all the different tyre options for this bike. As motorcycle tyre specialists, accredited by the major manufacturers, we can supply any tyre to you by mail order or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

These are common motorcycle tyre sizes and so you have plenty of choice, whether you want a tyre for Touring, Trackdays, Fast Road Riding, Winter Riding or High Mileage.

Speed Triple RR and RS tyre choices

The new Speed Triple R range runs a larger 190/55-17 rear tyre. All of our choices below are available in these sizes.

The Speed Triple RR comes with the excellent Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres as standard and the Speed Triple RS comes with the Metzeler Racetec K3 tyres. Both very much performance road-legal track tyres.

If you’re riding on the road, you might want to move to a slightly less extreme tyre. If you move to a tyre that warms-up faster, works better in all conditions – including when it’s raining – you’ll have more confidence in the bike, more faith in the front-end. We suggest you look at our choices in the Sports category.

Triumph Speed Triple History

In many ways I find it amazing that there’s still a Speed Triple in Triumph’s range because the original Speed Triple 900, which was launched in 1994 was a bit of a dogs dinner and about as cool as a pair of Clark’s school shoes. Still, the Speed Triple has come good and has seen more revamps than a Hollywood plastic surgeon.

What’s even more strange about the original Speed Triple is that Triumph ran a one-make race series with it and the grid was packed with aging ex-racers keen to prove they still had what it takes. The series was a huge success and proves my theory that bikes that shouldn’t go near a race track make for the best one-make racing series.

The T509 followed on from the 900 in 1998 and that was a better bike, losing a bit of the stuffy British-bike look of the original. That look prevailed for the next 5 years and if you were biking at the time you wouldn’t have missed a Speed Triple due to the fact they only made them in ludicrously unsubtle paintjobs, with names like Nuclear Pink and Vomit Green.

Then in 2005 the Speed Triple was reborn and it was a goody. With a new 1050cc triple-cylinder motor the Speed Triple was a peach. Over the next 5 years it was tweaks and nipped and tucked and in 2011 it was shelved for an all new model.

Gone were the round headlights and instead the bug-eyed look was born. The Speed Triple R was launched in 2013 and took advantage of the new model’s chassis. Triumph bolted on exotic parts like Ohlins front and rear suspension, lightweight wheels, top-spec Brembo brakes and lashings of carbon fibre.

That look has remained pretty much unchanged to this day and the Speed Triple looks just as good now as it did when it was launched, despite the fact it’s 7 years old and motorcycle years are like dog years, so by my reckoning it’s actually about 45 and looking a long way from the plastic surgeon’s knife.

Triumph Speed Triple Stock Tyres

The early 1050 models came with Pirelli Diablo Corsa tyres. The later models came with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres, with the R versions coming on Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP.

Triumph Speed Triple Best Tyres

Speed Triples are used for a huge range of applications. From commuting to trackdays, touring, and fast road rides.

Below we have a few good suggestions for you based on customer feedback:

Touring / Commuting:

These tyres offer all the grip you could need on the road and warm-up the fastest, plus perform best in all conditions. The only trade-off is that they won’t be quite as agile as a sports tyre because they tend to run a slightly flatter profile.

Metzeler Roadtec 02

Michelin Road 6

Pirelli Angel GT – There’s now an Angel GT2 but these GTs are excellent value for money

Fast Road Riding:

Bridgestone S23

Metzeler M9RR

Pirelli Diablo Rosso 4

Best of Both

If you want a tyre for fast weekend blasts and the occasional trackday, then check out the Pirelli Rosso 4 Corsa. It’s essentially a Rosso 4 in the central section with the shoulders of a Supercorsa SP. Fast road riders love these.

Trackdays:

The Pirelli and Metzeler are OEM tyres on the RR and RS models. However, if you prefer other brands check out the options below

Continental Race Attack 2 – A brilliantly sticky track-ready tyre with a cult following

Michelin Power Cup 2 – When you look at the -lack of – tread pattern, it’s amazing these are road legal!

Metzeler Racetec K3 – Stock on the RS

Pirelli Supercorsa SP – Stock on the RR

Triumph Speed Triple Tyre Pressures

You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.

If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:

Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi

Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi

Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi

125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi

You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
