Yamaha R9 Tyre Guide

Our recommended fitments for Yamaha’s R9, whether you’re doing trackdays, touring or heading out for sunny Sunday blasts.

Yamaha R9 Tyre Size

The Yamaha R9 runs a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 180/55/17 rear tyre. The same size as the YZF-R7 (and YZF-R6).

You can click those links to see all the different tyre options for this bike. As motorcycle tyre specialists, accredited by the major manufacturers, we can supply any tyre to you by mail order or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

These are common motorcycle tyre sizes and so you have plenty of choice, whether you want a tyre for Touring, Trackdays, Fast Road Riding, Wet Weather or High Mileage.

Yamaha R9 potted history

Can we call it a YZF? I’m not sure, as all the European reviews call it the Yamaha R9 but the US ones call it a YZF-R9? In this modern age of simplying everythingm, it seems Yamaha have ditched the YZF bit. I wonder if they can have a word with Suzuki about their GSX-S1000 GX? Can’t they just call it “The GX”? Anyway, I digress.

This is the first bike in AGES where the ‘delay’ in releasing it has made a bit of a rod for its own back. It was so obvious that the R9 needed to be made, following the success of the MT-09 (released over a decade earlier) and the YZF-R7. What took Yamaha so long?

Meanwhile Triumph have been refining, boring-out and sharpening up the Daytona 675 to a 765, setting a pretty high bar for the Yamaha. Can it make up for lost time?

Press reviews have been favourable. Can it steal sales from other bikes or will it just take sales from the YZF-R7 and MT-09? We’re keen to know what you use yours for.

Yamaha R9 Stock Tyres

The R9 comes fitted with Bridgestone RS11 tyres. These are sticky track-focused tyres but slightly longer in the tooth these days. Bridgestone’s ‘less’ sporty S23 is much more modern and probably a better bet if you won’t ride on track.

Yamaha R9 Best Tyres

The R9 is fittedwith fairly aggressive, track ready tyres as standard. They’re not bad tyres but perhaps not the best for those who only ride on the road, nor are they the stickiest things you could fit for trackdays. Here are a few different options:

Sticky tyre options

If you like to use your R9 for fast road riding, we think these tyres are better options than the stock tyres supplied with the bike.

Bridgestone S23

Metzeler M9RR

Michelin Power 6

All-weather options

The stock tyres are not idea for wet-weather, cold weather or mileage. If you want a tyre that’s sporty enough for road work but will warm up quickly and work in all conditions then these are for you:

Metzeler Z8

Michelin Road 6

Dunlop Roadsmart 4

Trackday focused

The stock RS11s are decent but not the best for trackdays. Bridgestone used to make a stickier tyre than the RS11, called the R11 (which was the stock tyre on the R1) but they’ve since pulled that model. It was arguably too extreme for the road and might have landed Bridgestone with lots of letters from angry solicitors after their clients ended up stuffing their R1 into a hedge.

The same goes for these tyres. They are not ones we’d recommend if you’re only riding on the road. These are pretty much race tyres, with just enough tread to keep the old bill happy.

Continental Race Attack 2

Dunlop D213GP

Michelin Power Cup 2

Yamaha R9 Tyre Pressures

You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.

If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:

Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi

Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi

Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi

125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi

You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
