Yamaha MT-09 Tyre Guide

Tyre sizes, the best tyre options, tyre pressures, reviews and more for the mighty Yamaha MT-09.

Yamaha MT-09 Tyre Size

The Yamaha MT-09 runs a 120/70/17 front tyre and a 180/55/17 rear tyre. These tyre sizes are also the same for the MT-09 SP (and the Yamaha XSR900 tyre sizes are also the same). No surprises there.

You can click those links to see all the different tyre options for this bike. As motorcycle tyre specialists, accredited by the major manufacturers, we can supply any tyre to you by mail order or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

These are common motorcycle tyre sizes and so you have plenty of choice, whether you want a tyre for Touring, Trackdays, Fast Road Riding, Winter Commuting tyres or High Mileage.

Yamaha MT-09 History

The MT-09 is a complete bruiser of a bike.

Introduced in 2013 with its 847cc triple-cylinder engine, I suspect it was Yamaha’s attempt to knock the Street Triple off the top spot. They waded in with the MT-09 and it was a cracking effort. When I reviewed the bike all those years ago, I wrote that I thought it was the perfect engine for road riders.

More power and less weight than the R6 (at the time) and only 5kg heavier than the Street Triple and a massive 40kg lighter than the Z800 (which was always stupidly heavy for some reason). The MT-09 is a docile road bike with with great manners, thanks to that naturally grunty triple-cylinder lump but wind it up a bit and it goes like stink.

The original bike had a slightly snatchy throttle response but over the years they have refined the package considerably. The new version now looks more like an MT-10 and also comes in an SP flavour, with an Ohlins rear shock and gold Nohlins fully adjustable front forks.

Using the same powerplant and chassis, Yamaha also sell the XSR900 (for stylemongers) and the Tracer 900 and Tracer 900 GT which are the modern day TDM900s but alas ridden by sartorially elegant, erudite gentlemen (or gentleladies) with fine taste in wines and – I’m told – incredible riding skills.

Yamaha MT-09 Stock Tyres

As far as we can tell, the original Yamaha MT-07 came with Bridgestone S20 tyres

The 2020 MT-09 SP came with Dunlop Sportmax GPR300 as the OEM tyre.

The 2021 MT-09 comes on the Bridgestone S20R tyres as standard.

Yamaha MT-09 Best Tyres

The MT-09 is generally used for weekend blasts or all-weather touring and commuting. So you could fit sporty tyres or tyres designed for commuting and all-weather grip.

Sticky tyre options

If you like to use your MT-09 for fast road riding, we think these tyres are better options than the stock tyres supplied with the MT-09.

Bridgestone S23

Metzeler M9RR

Michelin Power 6

All-weather options

The stock tyres are pretty good all-weather options but if you want improved performance, check out these options

Metzeler Z8

Michelin Road 6

Dunlop Roadsmart 4

Yamaha MT-09 Tyre Pressures

You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.

If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:

Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi

Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi

Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi

125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi

You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
