Vespa Scooter Tyre Size

Vespa is one of those brands that even non-bikers know about. But even some bikers don’t know that Vespa started off life as a model of scooter made by the Piaggio group in 1946, the name Vespa is Italian for wasp. The original Vespa was so popular that eventually Piaggio branched out and launched Vespa as a standalone brand.

Vespa Scooter History

In the 1950s Vespa were manufacturing their scooters in 13 different countries and selling them in over 110.

Not a lot of people know that Vespa were also made in Bristol in the UK, under licence by Douglas motorcycles for a period of around 15 years. Douglas then ceased manufacturing Vespas and instead imported them from Italy.

In the 60s, where MODs and Rockers ruled, both Vespa and Lambretta grew in popularity and the UK was the second largest global market for Vespa. Some of the classic models over the years include the Vespa 125, Vespa 150 GS, Vespa 90 Super Sprint, Vespa 180 Rally, Vespa 125 ET4, Vespa Primavera 125, Vespa Rally 2oo, and Vespa ET2 and ET4 models.

Fast forward 75 years and Vespa are one of the most popular scooter brands on the market and still owned by the Piaggio Group, one of the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturers. Piaggio also own Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Gilera and Derbi.

Vespa Scooter Best Tyres

If you have a modern Vespa, the chances are you use it for your daily commute, in which case you’re probably looking for a good value for money tyre that warms up quickly, offers lots of confidence and lasts well. One of the most popular tyres for the ET2 and ET4 models over the years was the Pirelli SL38 Unico. It’s still in production and it’s still a good tyre for every day riding.

If you have a classic Vespa, you’re probably more interested in a tyre that looks the business, whether that’s a whitewall Vespa tyre or just a trusted modern classic like the ones listed in this guide.

Below we’ve listed our recommended Vespa tyres for each category.

Best Commuter Tyre Choices

The tyres that suit the Vepsa really well and will handle the daily grind.

Michelin City Grip 2

Available in sizes to fit the more modern Vespas with 12″ wheels, the City Grip 2 is a very popular Vespa tyre and for good reason. They warm up quickly, handle the wet weather incredibly well and they offer outstanding grip in the dry. The City Grip 2 isn’t available for Vespas with 10″ wheels but the original Michelin City Grip is avasilable in a 10-inch size and that’s also a good tyre.

Bridgestone SC

The SC from Bridgestone is a brilliant tyre in all conditions. It might not have the crazy tread pattern of the Michelin above or the Anlas below but it’s still very good in adverse conditions. Arguably the sportiest tyre here, the SC is a great choice if you’re on a 12″-wheeled Vespa, like a GTS125 or GTS300. Although they don’t make this tyre in 10″ sizes, Bridgestone have a very similar tyre, the Bridgestone Hoop B01 which is available for 10″ rims.

Anlas Winter Grip NC500

If you’re riding in all conditions, especially during winter, the Winter Grip by Anlas is the one to go for. This is the only Mud & Snow (M&S) rated scooter tyre on the market at the moment and it’s designed to find grip where other tyres can’t. It’s available in 10-inch, 11-inch and 12-inch sizes. It’s a great choice for those who want optimum grip in the wet or icy conditions.

Best Whitewall Tyre Choices

Classic tyres to give your Vespa the authentic vintage look.

Kenda K418 White Wall

These Kendas are available in classic 10″ and modern 12″ sizes. So if you want yout GTS300 (or Sei Giorni) to look like a scooter from the 50s or 60s then these are the tyres to go for.

Continental K62 Whitewall

If you ride a classic Vespa and you’re looking to run whitewall tyres, these K62s from Continental are the ones to go for. The classic tread pattern and large white sidewall look the business. They’re only available in 10″ classic rim sizes.

Vespa Scooter Tyre Pressures

You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.

If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:

Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi

Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi

Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi

125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi

You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
