Triumph Tiger 1200 Tyre Guide

Our recommended tyres for the Triumph Tiger 1200 model range. The best options for all different riding scenarios.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Tyre Size

The Tiger 1200 has different tyre sizes depending on the year and version.

Triumph’s original big-daddy Adventure bike runs a 120/70/19 front tyre and a 170/60/17 rear tyre. That’s the same tyre sizes as the BMW R1200GS and R1250GS. So it’s off to a good start.

You can click those links to see all the different tyres available in the sizes for this bike. However below we have recommended what we consider to be the best options for the Tiger 1200.

As motorcycle tyre specialists, accredited by the major manufacturers, we can supply any tyre to you by mail order or you can have them fitted in our London motorcycle workshop.

The Explorer 1200 runs common Adventure-bike tyre sizes and so you have plenty of choices, whether you want a tyre for Commuting, Trail Riding, Touring or some proper Off-Roading.

New Tiger 1200 models

Triumph have re-vamped their Tiger 1200 range and now offer a host of new models. There’s the more road-focused Tiger 1200 GT, GT Pro and GT Explorer – these models run a 120/70-19 front tyre and a 150/70-18 rear tyre.

Then there’s the more off-road focused Tiger 1200 Rally Pro and Rally Explorer. These models run a 90-90/21 front tyre and a 150-70-18 rear tyre.

Triumph Tiger 1200 History

Introduced in 2012 the 1215cc triple-cylinder Tiger was aimed squarely at BMW’s R1200GS. Triumph could see that BMW was having it away in the Adventure-bike market. The triple-cylinder Triumph was so close to the GS in terms of ergonomics, looks and target rider. If you put a bike cover over both of them, 50% of people wouldn’t be able to guess which one was which.

Despite Triumph’s efforts to recreate the GS, they couldn’t recreate the flat-twin engine or paralever suspensions which are arguably at the heart of what makes the GS so good.

Now in its fourth generation, the 1200 is still a popular choice but arguably the Tiger 900 is the new head of the pack.

Triumph Tiger 1200 Stock Tyres

There are over 10 different Triumph Tiger models. There’s the 1200XR, 1200XRx, Alpine Edition, 1200 XRt, XCx and XCA plus low-seat-height versions. They all run the same tyre sizes and most of them come on Metzeler Tourance Next as the OEM tyre choice.
