Adventure motorcycle tyres

R1200GS, Africa Twin, KTM Adventure, knobbly, trail, green lane, touring, off-road. These are the things we think of when we think about Adventure motorcycling.

Here at Two Tyres, we’re Adventure motorcycle specialists and we hold over 50 different models of Adventure-bike tyres in stock.

Adventure motorcycle tyres come in three main types.

There are tyres for road riders who never leave the tarmac (or if you do, it’s on a dry trail that you could ride any motorcycle along). A good example of a tyre for this category is the Continental Trail Attack 3, which is a road tyre available in the 19-inch Adventure bike front wheel sizes. They’ll help give the bike a planted and comfortable ride on the road and you’ll get the best mileage from them. Other good examples are the Metzeler Tourance Next 2 and Bridgestone A41 which also have compatible sizes. If you want a slightly more off-road capable tyre, the Continental TKC70 is the next step in slightly better off-road performance. You can also check out the Metzeler Karoo Street or Bridgestone AT41.

Then there are the road tyres with a ‘knobbly’ look and a bit of ability when it comes to green laning. Most adventure motorcycles are supplied with these types of tyres as they look the part. They’ve got tread blocks and they look rugged. They’re still a road tyre but they’ll be a better bet for trail riding than a pure road tyre. However if the trails get wet or muddy, even these rugged-looking tyres won’t be up to the task of getting a 250kg Adventure bike up a muddy forest track. A typical tyre here is a Michelin Anakee Adventure, an Anlas Capra R or a Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR. 

Then there are the ‘proper’ off-road capable tyres. These are the ones with the big tread blocks that look like they’ve come from a Monster Truck. A typical tyre here is a Continental TKC80, a Michelin Anakee Wild, Anlas Capra X or a Heidenau K60 Scout and Bridgestone AX41. They’re not great if you’re going to do lots of road miles; the big tread blocks will make the bike wander at speed, the side grip won’t be that good, the ride comfort will be terrible and they’ll wear out in no time at all (think 1,000 miles and you’re doing well).

These aren’t the first choice for road riding. These are the tyres that will help get your Adventure bike up that wet steep incline, over those slippery tree roots and into lands unknown. If you’re riding on wide gravel trails, these are the tyres that will help the bike get purchase and give you lots of confidence when the going gets loose.
