Avon Trekrider AV84 & AV85
The Trekrider is Avon's 50/50 road/off-road tyre, like a Range Rover equally as good in the mud as on the tarmac. These are M+S rated if you ever find yourself in Germany and it's starting to snow.

Description
TrekRider is Avon’s first adventure tyre that offers a 50/50 split of on road versus off-road performance. Designed for light to medium trails, the tyre works as well in mud and gravel as it does on tarmac.
The TrekRider’s pattern is all-new, with specially-designed tread blocks and channels that cut through mud, yet also stay stable on tarmac and concrete.
They’re a firm favourite of Adventure-motorcycle legend Sam Manicom who has this to say when he reviewed them: “The roads were an absolute buzz and I surprised myself with my ability in the corners. The TrekRiders were so grippy there wasn’t much of the curve of the tyres that I didn’t ride on. Scooting along the dirt roads was just as much fun. The tread pattern is meant for a really solid grip on the loose stuff. This works because of the wider grooves in the pattern. These tyres were going to be perfect for the mix of riding we do. The tyre design is a dual compound which means a softer very grippy rubber on the sides and a harder longer wearing rubber in the centre.”
If you are an Adventure-bike rider and you delve a little bit deeper than just the green lanes the Trekrider is a great option.
Avon Trekrider highlights:
-
VERSATILE CONSTRUCTION: Perfect on and off road capability
-
SPECIALLY FORMULATED COMPOUND: Improved multi-terrain grip
-
AGGRESSIVE PATTERN DESIGN: Ultra-high performance off-road
Press Reviews
“The other additions that discerning readers will have noticed are the Africa Twin’s new sneakers. They’re called the TrekRider, Avon’s answer to the question of which tyre to use for splitting time between pavement and dirt.
Even though they’re dubbed a 50/50 tyre, I think the split leans toward asphalt use. I’ve been impressed with street performance, and they ended up lasting about 5,600 miles before they were toast. On loose gravel and dirt roads they work well but not discernably better than the Dunlop Trailmax rubber the AT came with. I would have said the Avons were more of a 70/30 tyre. Still, they offer a more rugged look without giving up street chops and have decent durability.” – Motorcyclist Magazine

“Even with earplugs firmly in place I can usually hear the whine of typical 50/50 on-off-pavement adventure tyres rolling beneath me, but not the TrekRiders. I credit their stout chevron tread for the gift of quiet travel, and for the smooth ride I enjoyed on paved surfaces.
A gravel farm road near the Oregon border had the Avons scratching for traction on its skittery surface. Reducing pressure would have helped, but the sun was setting and camp was…up the road somewhere. Control improved greatly on the all-weather forest track that followed, with its hard-packed dirt and occasional loose sections. We climbed endless switchbacks without a slip or unintentional slide.
For the final stretch of riding to an 8,000ft above sea-level view point, pressures were dropped to see how the tyres, with their stiff carcasses and multi-ply nylon sidewalls, would cope with some more challenging terrain:
On this intense five-mile stretch taken mostly in first gear, we maneuvered through—and occasionally bashed into—the sharp, stationary rocks that litter the road. The Avons took their licks, but held up to the abuse, and a quick 1,200 miles of highway home. The fast pavement work wore down the rear tread, as it is has done to most of the capable adventure tyres I’ve sampled.
Overall, I was impressed with the TrekRiders’ all-surface dry traction (no rain or mud thereabouts), lack of noise, and all-around good manners—just what you want in a 50/50 tyre.” – Rider magazine
