We have a motorcycle tyres trackday pressure guide but it doesn’t cover Sports Touring tyres because these aren’t frequently used on track. However you can do a trackday on Sports Touring tyres – you just won’t have the same grip as you might with Sports tyres.
In terms of setting the correct tyre pressures, here’s our advice:
Before the first session, let 3psi out of the tyres from cold, go out in the first session and ride a few laps, then come back in and check your pressures now that your tyres are warm. You want the pressures to be the same as your road pressures (which vary from bike to bike but should be approximately 35-37psi front and 36-42 psi rear. If they are too high, drop a few psi out of them.
If you start the day by dropping too much pressure from your tyres, you then might end up with them still too low, even when warm. The problem with this is that you have to pump them up which is more hassle than letting a bit more out. Once you’ve set your pressures, you should be good for the rest of the day.
If you get more confident and start putting in faster laps, it’s worth checking your pressures when you come in to the pits to make sure they haven’t crept up too high.
As a general rule, if you have more than 38psi in your front tyre and 42psi in your rear, you are probably running too much pressure and would benefit from reducing it.
