Rim tape is used on rims that are spoked. The tape runs around the inside of the rim where the spokes meet the rim. It is used to prevent the spoke nipples from puncturing the inner tube. This is an example of a popular motorcycle rim tape.
When you replace your tyres or inner tube, you’ll be able to inspect the rim tape. Make sure it’s in good condition and covering the spoke heads. Rim tapes come in a variety of sizes from 16″ all the way up to 21″ and they are commonly used in Adventure bikes, Classic bikes and Custom bikes.
If you’re in any doubt about your rim tape, we recommend you replace it as rim tape only costs a few quid, which is a fraction of the cost of a new tube or the cost for your local tyre shop to remove and refit your tyre.
