Do I need to change my tyre pressure if I’m carrying a pillion?

< 1 min read

Your motorcycle or scooter’s owner’s manual will list the recommended pressures you should run when riding solo or when riding with a pillion.

If you don’t have access to your manual, then a good rule of thumb is to add around 3 to 5psi to your tyres.

Some motorcycles with electronic adjustable suspension will also have settings for solo rider or a rider with luggage or a pillion. This will increase the bike’s preload (usually just the rear) to compensate for the pillion’s weight.

As well as setting your tyre pressures, it is important to check the load rating of your tyres to ensure they are suitable.

You should also check the condition of your tyres before you carry a passenger. The additional weight will add more load to the tyre and increase tyre wear. It’s not a great idea to start your two-up European tour on tyres that have less than 50% of the tread remaining.
