Some rear tyres have no tread in the central belt of the tyre, is this legal?

< 1 min read

If a tyre is E marked then it is road legal when new.

For a motorcycle tyre to be legal in the UK it needs at least 1.0mm of tread depth around the circumference of the tyre for 75% of the central width and the remainder of the original pattern must be visible.

As tyres get used, they wear out. Some of the modern sticky road tyres have a very high land to sea ratio. The part of the tyre that touches the ground is the land and the tread grooves are known as the sea. On some tyres this can be up to 96% land, meaning a lot of the tyre has no tread on it. However most of these are super sticky track-focused tyres and they tend to have their tread grooves on the central section of the tyre.

If there are no tread grooves at all on the central section of the tyre, the chances are it’s due for replacement.
