This depends on the state of wear on both tyres.
Replacing both tyres at the same time is often recommended, but not always essential.
Fitting a new tyre alongside a heavily worn one can lead to imbalanced handling, as grip levels and profiles may differ significantly. Replacing both tyres together ensures consistent performance and predictable handling. If you replace your rear tyre, for example, and your front is well worn, the rear may offer feel and grip that the front cannot match. This may cause you grip issues or inconsistent feedback. At worst, this may result in a crash.
We often state to customers in our workshop that when you replace a single tyre, you don’t really feel the benefit if you run it with a part-worn tyre.
However, if one tyre is still in good condition, replacing only the worn tyre may be acceptable, provided the remaining tyre is suitable and compatible.
If in doubt, replacing both tyres together is usually the safest and most consistent option.
