Motorcycle tyres play a significant role in how effectively ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) operates.
ABS relies on consistent tyre grip and predictable rolling behaviour to detect when a wheel is about to lock. Tyres with insufficient grip, incorrect pressure, excessive wear, or unsuitable construction can reduce the effectiveness of the system. For example, a tyre with hardened rubber or uneven wear may provide inconsistent feedback, causing ABS to intervene earlier or more aggressively than expected.
Tyre size and profile also matter. If a tyre deviates significantly from the manufacturer’s recommended size, it can alter rolling characteristics and affect how ABS sensors interpret wheel speed. This may not disable ABS, but it can change braking feel and performance.
Correct tyre pressures are particularly important for ABS-equipped motorcycles, as underinflation or overinflation can alter the tyre’s contact patch and braking behaviour.
To ensure ABS functions as intended, tyres should be correctly specified, in good condition, and inflated to appropriate pressures for the load and riding conditions.
