Do motorcycle wheels need balancing?

< 1 min read

Yes they do.

However the front is a lot more important than the rear.

Modern tyre production produces a very uniform tyre these days but there are variables in the thickness of the tyre and also in your rim and of course the valve.

If your tyre fitter doesn’t balance the front wheel, there is a risk it will vibrate and you’ll notice this vibration through the bars as anything from a hand-tingling buzz to a sensation much like riding over cobbles.

The rear is less important, especially on a chain-drive bike. You don’t have as direct a connection to the rear, so you won’t feel an imbalance plus the rear is under load from the chain or shaft drive, which somewhat masks any imbalance.

That said, you should have both of your wheels balanced to ensure they are the best they can be. However if a wheel weight drops off your rear wheel, it’s unlikely you’ll notice it but if you need one replacing, just drop into our London motorcycle workshop and we’ll get you sorted.
