Can I run non-OEM tyres on my motorcycle?

< 1 min read

Yes, non-OEM motorcycle tyres are legal for road use, provided they meet legal and safety requirements.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) tyres are simply the tyres a motorcycle was supplied with when new. You are not legally required to continue using the same brand or model once replacements are needed.

However, replacement tyres must be suitable for your motorcycle. This means they must be the correct size, load rating, speed rating, and construction type, and must be approved for road use. Tyres must also be in good condition and meet the legal minimum tread depth.

Many riders ditch the OEM tyres as soon as possible, as often these are a budget specification of tyre. Replacement tyres can better suit your riding style and riding conditions, whether that is commuting, touring, sport riding, or track days. This is perfectly legal when done correctly.

If you are unsure whether a particular tyre is suitable for your bike, checking the manufacturer’s recommendations or seeking professional advice is advisable.
