Slime is a brand of tyre sealant and it’s pretty good at the job it’s designed to do: apply a temporary puncture repair.
While the manufacturers of Slime claim that it can be fully washed from the inside of a tyre in order that a permanent repair can be used, you’ll probably get a different answer from your local tyre shop.
The main issue is safety.
Most tyre shops don’t have the time to properly wash out the inside of a tyre, to remove every trace of Slime. When you fit a permament tyre repair, it is done from the inside, using a patch with a core that goes through the puncture and glue to hold the patch in place. This glue is very reliable but if water or other chemicals are involved, the glue might not properly hold the patch and enable a permanent seal.
That’s why, is a tyre sealent has been used, your local motorcycle tyre shop will be reluctant to try and apply a permanent seal. They are looking after your safety as they won’t be able to be 100% confident the repair will hold. The last thing a tyre shop wants is to be responsible for a blow-out at motorway speeds.
If you can bring your properly cleaned tyre and rim to your local tyre shop, like us here at Two Tyres, the chances are they’ll happily apply a permanent repair for you, while making your aware that it might not hold.
If you have used tyre slime and it’s got you out of a tight spot, don’t roll the dice again. The best bet is to replace the tyre with a new one, in order to not play with your safety.
