Ducati Hypermotard History
Introduced in 2007 the original Ducati Hypermotard was a departure form the normal for Ducati. The old air-cooled 1078cc engine didn’t look like it should work in a Supermoto chassis but the big lump produced buckets of torque at low revs making the Hypermotard a wheelie-happy bike that could also do the sensible commute too.
The later models was the EVO and Ducati also produced a hot SP version which featured fully adjustable suspension, lightweight wheels more powerful brakes, carbon fibre and race-style footpegs.
The smaller 796 version was introduced in 2009 and while a good commuter, it never really captured the spirit of the bigger brother.
With the 821 came Ducati’s first water-cooled engine, which made the Hypermotard a more rev-hungry bike, which some say is where the Hypermotard lost its Supermoto spirit. The latest 950 version is by all accounts a much more refined bike but probably faster from A to B than the original 1100.

Ducati Hypermotard Stock Tyres
The Hypermotard has traditionally been supplied on Pirelli Diablo Rosso tyres as standard.
Ducati Hypermotard Best Tyres
The Hypermotard range works well on sports road tyres. They warm up quickly and allow you to get maximum grip on the road. Most Hypermotards are used as a second bike and as such they don’t tend to clock up huge mileages, so there’s little point going for a touring tyre as you won’t get to enjoy the performance of the bike as much on the road.
We think the best Ducati Hypermotard tyres are:
The Bridgestones are brilliant sticky road tyres but they have a fast warm-up and can deal with wet weather too. If you are taking your Hypermotard on track, they’ll be more than capable.
The Mutants have a ‘Supermoto’ look which definitely earns them bonus points but aside from the tread pattern these are great road tyres, with plenty of edge grip.
The Rosso 3 is a solid contender. Now priced cheaper due to the launch of the Rosso 4, these are Pirelli through and through, great grip and profile to bring out the best of the Hypermotard’s handling.
Ducati Hypermotard Tyre Pressures
You can find your motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures in your owner’s handbook. You’ll also find a tyre pressure chart sticker on the swingarm.
If you have no idea what pressures to run, this is our general rule:
Scooter: F 30psi, R 30psi
Normal Motorcycle: F 36psi, R 42psi
Big Tourer: F 42psi, R 42psi
125cc Bike: F 33psi, R 36psi
You should always check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Check out our range of motorcycle tyre pressure gauges here.
