BMW S1000RR History
The arrived of BMW’s S1000RR shocked the motorcycle world when it was launched in 2009. It was BMW’s first proper superbike and it not only held a candle to the established Japanese competition, it pretty much caught them napping and became the coveted superbike of 2009 and 2010.
With a 998cc four-cylinder engine producing over 170bhp, the S1000RR is an absolute weapon. Some of the early models were dynoed at over 180bhp! Although similar to the rivals in that it is a four-cylinder-engined motorcycle with DOHC, a stacked gearbox, two wheels a seat and some controls, it moved the game on. The Sport model came with ABS, traction control gear-shift assist and power modes.
BMW were cautious not to launch their new Superbike with heated grips, in case it risked the S1000RR’s race-track potential but the 2012 version did come with heated grips and it’s all the better for them!
The S1000RR hasn’t had much success in top-flight racing but that hasn’t affected it popularity with road riders and club racers alike. It is still one of the best-selling motorcycles out there and easily in the top-selling sportsbikes in the UK.
The S1000RR has had countless model revisions over the years and the latest version, introduced in 2019 now has variable valve timing, called Shift-Cam to further improve the bike’s top-end power.
2009 – launch model
2012 – Refined electronics and other small detail changes
2013 – A special HP4 version was introduced
2015 – First major update since the bike’s launch. Engine mods, lighter frame and optional lightweight wheels
