When storing a motorcycle for an extended period, maintaining correct tyre pressure is important.
If possible, store your motorcycle on stands with the wheels off the ground. This not only alleviates the pressure being put through the tyres but it also stops the tyres from being in contact with a cold surface, which can cause flat-spots and cracking on the tyre. If you cannot put your bike on stands, then place carpet between the tyres and the ground, which will help prevent a focused area of the tyre becoming exposed to extreme cold temperatures.
Tyres naturally lose small amounts of air over time, so starting storage with correctly inflated tyres helps reduce the risk of underinflation. Slightly increasing pressure within safe limits can help compensate for the gradual air loss experienced during storage.
When a tyre supports the same load in one position for weeks or months, the rubber can deform, leading to vibration or uneven feel when riding again. This is more common with underinflated tyres or in cold environments. Using paddock stands, rotating the wheels occasionally, or ensuring tyres are correctly inflated can reduce the risk. Minor flat spots may disappear after riding, but severe cases can permanently affect a tyre’s performance.
Underinflated tyres are more prone to flat-spotting and sidewall deformation when left stationary for long periods.
It is also advisable to check pressures periodically during storage, particularly if the bike is stored for several months.
