You might have heard of the rider who burnt through their motorcycle’s tyres in a session and the one who’s on their eighth trackday on the same set of tyres.
The truth is, we all wear tyres differently and we won’t all get the same amount of laps out of the same tyre.
Generally speaking, you ought to be able to get a couple of trackdays out of a set of track-focused tyres. If you’re getting through them in one trackday, you might be able to improve your set-up or riding style to get more from the tyres, without necessarily sacrificing your lap times.
However there are lots of factors that affect your tyre wear.
Factors that affect your tyre wear:
- Your pace
- The track surface
- The conditions
- The tyre’s pressure
- Your throttle control
- Whether or not you run tyre warmers
- Whether or not you keep your tyre warmers on all day or not
- Your suspension settings
- Your corner entry speed
- Your traction control settings
- The tyre size
- Your wheel alignment
- The bike you ride
- The rider’s weight
- Your body position
- Your corner exit technique
As you can see, there are a lot of variables when it comes to tyre wear.
The biggest causes of premature tyre wear?
We think the factors that you should focus on, to improve your tyre wear are as follows:
- Setting the correct tyre pressures
- Well-set-up suspension
- Carrying more corner entry speed, therefore increasing your minimum corner speed, which ties in to..
- …not whacking the throttle open and relying on the traction control to sort it out and help you make up the time you lost in the corner
It’s fairly easy to sort out the first two issues. We admit, the last two aren’t so easy.
That said, some tyres do naturally last longer than others.
Here at Two Tyres, we’ve raced to a decent level, we regularly do trackdays and we talk to hundreds of riders a year about their track tyres. We never stop learning, but we feel like we’ve got a bit of relevant knowledge to share.
If you want a set of tyres to last more than a couple of trackdays, here are some suggestions that we think naturally last longer than the average:
