Underinflated tyres are a far bigger problem than overinflated motorcycle tyres.
One of the most common questions we’re asked if whether you should run lower tyre pressures when it’s raining or cold and the simple answer is no. You can read that guide to find out more.
Running reduced tyre pressures will do the following to your motorcycle tyre:
- Close up the tread blocks so water doesn’t get as efficiently removed from the road surface
- Make the tyre run hotter than it’s designed to, increasing tyre wear
- Risk the tyre delaminating due to heat
- Make the bike harder to turn into corners
- Make the bike want to sit up in corners
- Make the bike feel vague
In short, underinflated tyres are a biker’s nemesis.
It makes sense to check your motorcycle tyre pressures at least once a month and have the means to pump them up if they are low.
Please don’t take the advice of the forum scholars who claim that running lower pressures has many advantages, especially in terms of wet weather grip. It really doesn’t and hopefully the list above proves why.
