Do my tyres have to rotate in a certain direction?

1 min read

In most cases, yes.

The sidewall of your motorcycle tyre will tell you the direction of rotation.

For larger motorcycles, there is no universal rotation, the front and rear will have to rotate in the single direction listed by the manufacturer.

For smaller motorcycles, like 125s and a lot of scooters, some tyres will be a universal fitment because the front and rear tyres are the same size. This means the tyre can be fitted to the front or rear of the bike. However you still need to follow the directional arrow for that tyre. For example the tyre will have a direction of rotation with an F on it or the word Front and then an arrow in the opposite direction with an R next to it or Rear, to signify the rear tyre direction of rotation.

The Kenda K434 in 90/90/14 is a universal fitment which can go on a front or rear but the tyre has to rotate in the same direction.

The Continental Conti Go is a universal fitment but the front has to rotate in one direction and the rear in the opposite direction. This is due to the way the tyres work together to channel and remove water.

On some classic bikes, there are tyres available like an Avon Speedmaster Mk2 that are designated as a front tyre or a rear tyre but there is no directional arrow on either tyre, meaning they can be fitted whichever way around you like.

  1. I have the Avon Speedmaster Mk2 (front) and Avon Safety Mileage AM7 (rear). Thanks for the information on the ‘no directional’ installation requirement. But is there a valve stem marking on these tires to line up? I’ve seen a comment that there would be a dot marking by the tire bead, but I seen nothing…. So, does this not matter as well? Thanks!

    • Hi Kelly,

Thats right their is not a valve line up dot on these tyres. Enjoy using them.
