The first thing to get right is to ensure you’re choosing the right sized tyre with the correct speed and load rating for your bike. If in doubt, consult your owner’s manual or give your local motorcycle tyre shop a call.
The next most important factor is to be honest with yourself about the type of riding you are doing. The wrong tyre can dent your confidence, ruin your enjoyment and end up costing you more than you need to spend.
For example if you ride a Superbike on the road you might not need the ‘stickiest’ motorcycle tyre, even if you’re a fast road rider. A road-legal track focused tyre like the Bridgestone R11 or Pirelli Supercorsa V3 SC might look the part but it’s likely it won’t work as well as a Sports Touring tyre in most conditions. That and it won’t give you the feel (or grip) that a more road-focused tyre would across the range of conditions you’ll encounter on a typical day’s riding. A sticky track tyre will also wear out faster than a sports-touring tyre and a squared off sticky tyre won’t help your handling one bit.
Similarly if you ride an Adventure bike you might love the rugged look of an adventure tyre like the Continental TKC80 but if you don’t ride off-road, you’d be better off on a more road-focused tyre without the tread blocks. A rugged tyre can shift mud and bite into loose surfaces but on the road it’ll not ride as comfortably or return as good a mileage as a sports-touring tyre like a Metzeler Roadtec 01.
