Can you run a crossply tyre on any bike?

< 1 min read

The simple answer is no.

They don’t make Cross-Ply tyres in larger sizes like a 180/55 ZR17 rear but they do make Bias Belt tyres in larger sizes, which tend to get used on bikes like Harley Davidsons.

Even if you could fit a 190/55 ZR17 Cross-Ply tyre to your ZX-10R, you really wouldn’t want to. A Cross-Ply tyre doesn’t have the rigidity or sidewall stiffness of a Radial and so the tyre would expand at speed. Plus a larger tyre like that would be like trying to corner on a beach ball, most of your steering effort would go into flexing the tyre.

That said, Marc Marquez would still be able to lap quicker on Cross-Plys than we could on Radials. You know it!
