Yamaha YZF-R6Â History
In 1998 Yamaha bet big on the 600cc supersport market, which was on the rise. The YZF-R600 Thundercat was fat and heavy compared to the CBR600 and ZX-6R and rev-happy GSX-R600 SRAD. Yamaha needed something new and the R6 was an instant hit. A track-ready buzzing supersport 600 that you could thrash all day long on UK roads.
The early bikes are long in the tooth these days but something of an appreciating classic. In 2001 Yamaha updated the R6 to include a quick release number plate hanger and LED taillights. Then in 2003 the R6 got a new swingarm, fuel injection to replace the replaces carbs, a revised frame and five-spoke wheels.
Then in 2006 Yamaha introduced an all-new R6 to keep up with the competition. The sharp and angular new R6 was a ground-up new motorcycle and was again the bike to beat.
These days 600 supersport bikes have all but dropped off the radar but YamahA have stayed true to their racing ethos and the current R6 is sharper than ever and now features traction control.
