How long can a motorcycle sit on the same tyres?

< 1 min read

A motorcycle can sit unused on the same tyres for long periods, but tyre condition should be assessed before riding again.

Age, storage conditions, and exposure to sunlight or temperature changes all affect tyre condition. Even if tread depth appears acceptable, tyres can harden or crack over time.

If a bike has been stored for several months or longer, tyres should be inspected for cracking, flat spots, and correct pressure before use.

Old or degraded tyres may no longer provide safe grip, even if they look visually acceptable.

Here at Two Tyres we recommend that you fit tyres before they are 5 years old and replace them when they are 10 years old. The date code can be found on the tyre’s sidewall. It’s a four-digit number, for example 4225 means the tyre was produced in the 42nd week of 2025.

This general rule should be followed but if your tyres look deformed, cracked or otherwise perished, you should replace them regardless of the date code.
