Can I run a slick and a treaded tyre?

< 1 min read

You can’t on the road because a slick motorcycle tyre isn’t road legal.

On track, there’s no reason why you can’t.

The last time we saw a treaded tyre and a slick used together was during a BEMSEE Thunderbike Extreme race. One rider on an GSX-R1000 fitted a sticky treaded front tyre (Bridgestone R11) and ran a slick rear (Bridgestone V02). The track was dry but it has been freezing cold the night before and the track temperatures were still low. The rider wanted the treaded front in order to get the most amount of grip and feel over the first few laps, with the logic being that this increased trust in the front would allow him to run a higher corner speed in the opening laps and build more temperature in his rear tyre.

You could argue that two treaded tyres would have been a better option but you’re open to choose a combination that you think will work best for the conditions.
