Can I mix different tread patterns on my MX bike?

< 1 min read

Absolutely.

In fact it’s not all that common to find an MX bike that is running the same make and model of tyre on the front as on the rear.

In the off-road world, there are loads more compounds of tyre, loads of tyres with different tread block heights and even dual compound tyres.

Take Michelin for example, they offer the Starcross tyre in a Sand, Soft, Medium and Hard compound.

Because the front and rear tyres perform very separate jobs off-road, it makes sense to fit a tyre that best copes with the conditions.

In fact tyre manufacturers will make a particular tyre that’s only available in rear sizes or front sizes. You just don’t see that with road bikes, where it’s advisable to run the same make and model of tyre on the front and rear. Just take a look at Kenda’s range of off-road motorcycle tyres, you can run any combination of front and rear and most of those tyre models are only available in either a front or rear fitment.
