Dunlop D212 GP Racer Treaded
Like its slick cousin the Dunlop D212 GP Racer treaded is a 'fit it and forget' trackday tyre. These work superbly in a medium front and endurance rear compound if riding to your trackday is your thing.

Description
The Dunlop Sportmax GP Racer D212 is a Track Day tyre offering riders:
- NTEC system allows riders to reduce tyre pressures for additional grip in track day conditions.
- Revised centre and shoulder compounds boost dry grip levels.
- Derived from the Isle of Man TT winning D212 GP Pro race tyre.
The original production-spec version of the tyre was used in the final round of the French Superbike Championship where Lucas Mahias won both Supersport races on the GMT94 Yamaha. It’s a seriously good bit of kit and not far behind the trackday slicks.
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRACK DAY
In typical UK temperatures on most circuits, our recommendation for GP Racer series tyres is to use the harder M compound on the front, and E compound on the rear.
WHAT THIS TYRE GIVES YOU:
DUNLOP TYRE TECHNOLOGIES
Dunlop were the earliest manufacturer to apply race tyre performance standards to street tyres. With engineers and designers across Europe, Japan and North America.
- MULTI-TREAD (MT) TECHNOLOGY – Years of success in global Superbike, Endurance and GP championships have resulted in the development of a pioneering multi-compound, which is transferred to many of our current Sportmax track and road products. By mixing compounds, the same tyre can display different performance properties at maximum leaning angles than when upright during straight line speed.
- JOINTLESS BELT (JLB) CONSTRUCTION – All our radial street tyres are designed using a combination of Computer Design (CAD) technology and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as well as JointLess Belt (JLB) construction (either front or rear). JLB construction eliminates the belt overlaps resulting in smoother handling and a more stable contact patch with the road.
- NTEC – Dunlop’s ingenious NTEC pressure adjust system allows the rider to optimise the tyre by adjusting inflation pressure. For dry track days, deflating the tyre will deliver predictable and tenacious handling on the limit. Back on the road, re-inflating to the manufacturer’s recommended pressures will reward the rider with class-leading levels of grip and performance.
- JOINTLESS TREAD (JLT) – Jointless Tread (JLT) strip-winding technology allows multiple compounds to be precisely positioned on the tyre to achieve advantages in durability, wear resistance, grip from the tread centre to shoulder and high-speed tyre stability.
Press Reviews
“We got the chance to test the new GP Racer D212s, hot off their warmers, at Dunlop’s 3km test track at Mireval, near Montpellier, on a road-going R1 and ZX-10R using the harder Medium/Endurance front and rear, and Dunlop’s race-prepped R1 test bike fitted with the Soft/Medium compounds.
On both 1000cc road bikes, with their soft suspension set-ups, there’s more grip than you know what to do with at either end. But it’s only when you try them on a machine like the race-prepped R1 with stiffer, cleaner handling, increased ground clearance and racier brakes and power that you can really pick out what these new tyres are all about.
Front grip is absolute and you can throw the gnarly R1 on its side with ridiculous speed and confidence. Changes of direction through flip- flops are a piece of cake and there’s loads of rear grip, too. Bikes with over 200bhp can make even the best race tyres drift, but the GP Racers slide progressively and with bags of feel.” – MotorcycleNews

“They had a short life, but packed a lot in” says John. “They brought out the best in me with their sharp steering and slick-like side-grip that made trackdays a joy.” – John McAvoy Performance Bikes

We’ve used Dunlop’s new fast road/trackday tyre on our 2008/2017 Fireblades.
Common to both is great side grip and surprisingly predictable cold performance; both bikes on the GP Racers were out in the damp at the PB trackday without any grief, despite Rockingham’s sub-par wet weather grip.
Low running pressures mean they’re squidgy and wobbly if you use them without warmers, but the NTEC carcasses soon warm up and get on with it. On our 2008 Fireblade, which isn’t naturally fast steering, it made it a little harder to tip in or lever from side to side; they’re quite triangular to give a large contact patch on the edge, but it takes effort to get off the central contact patch, and Chris felt the Honda was happier on the Metzelers it ran before. But my more nimble new model didn’t suffer, and got on fine with them.
If your bike’s steering is already pin sharp, you’ll enjoy the great edge grip and ability to hold a line. They were also consistent as they wore, with no discernible performance drop-off. Bikes with more leisurely turn-in will likely need setting up to suit them.” John McAvoy, Performance Bikes
“Instantly transformed the front end and made the ZX-10R turn like a full-blown racing superbike. ” Performance Bikes
