What you need to know about motorcycle puncture repair
A bit of advice that could stop you making the problem worse.
There are two types of repair, a permanent repair and temporary repair.
A temporary repair is done from the outside of the tyre without removing the tyre from the rim. These are a good ‘get you home’ fix but shouldn’t be relied upon to see out the tyre’s life.
A permanent repair involves taking the tyre off the rim and applying the bung from the inside. It’s stronger and uses more material so it will stay in place. With a permanent repair, assuming you don’t get any more punctures, you can see out the tyre’s life.
You can’t repair front tyres
It’s not legal as it’s not safe to do so. If a front tyre repair blows out, you will rapidly lose pressure in the tyre and control of the bike.
You can only legally repair a tyre three times
After this, you need to replace the tyre.
Tyre foam won’t fix a puncture
It can be a handy way to get up and running, enabling you to get to a tyre shop but once you’ve used tyre weld or tyre foam, you won’t be able to carry out a permanent repair as the foam affects the puncture repair patch’s adhesive. When it comes to inner tubes, tyre foam just won’t work.
If you get a puncture, leave the item in there
Removing the offending object might seem like a sensible thing to do but it’ll almost always be worse than keeping it in place. If you spot a nail or screw in the tyre, check your pressures, inflate the tyre if you need to and ride (very carefully) to your local motorcycle tyre shop. If the tyre isn’t damaged, it can be repaired.
You can’t repair a puncture that goes through the sidewall
Any puncture that goes through the sidewall or is within an inch from the edge of the tyre can’t be legally repaired. We will advise you on whether we can or cannot repair your tyre. If we can’t, we can fit a new one in the same amount of time as it takes us to fix a puncture.
If your mobile repairer uses a temporary fix, you will need to replace the tyre
If your repair is done from the outside of the tyre it’s a temporary one. While these can last for a long time, they’re not a ‘professional’ repair and may work loose over time. As the saying goes, if you’re going to do a job, do it properly. However if you are stranded and you have your own puncture repair kit, then a temporary fix is a great option.
Mobile vs Workshop
Typically a mobile motorcycle tyre fitter will charge a £75 call-out fee and then around £50 to repair a puncture.
Here at Two Tyres, there’s no call-out fee, because you ride to us and we charge £35 to repair your puncture. This includes removing and re-fitting your wheel and rebalancing it once the puncture repair has been completed.
Mobile motorcycle puncture repairers are great if you are stranded and really can’t move the bike or if you’re stuck at work or home. However, they are more expensive than a motorcycle tyre shop. If you ride to us, it’ll cost you £35 for our professional puncture repair service, saving you £80.
We hold over 300 tyres in stock and offer a fast-fit service. We have a comfortable waiting room with free WiFi, desk space for you to work from and sofas for you to relax in.
The workshop advantage
Another plus is that you don’t have to hang around for us to arrive. Just turn up, check-in and we’ll sort your bike out for you while you relaxed in our waiting room. We cover motorcycles and scooters and if we can’t fix it due to the puncture location making it illegal to do so, we can supply you with a replacement tyre there and then.
Taking a typical puncture on a scooter like a Vespa, we’ll be around £75 cheaper than if you used a call out service.
