As a motorcycle tyre fitting workshop, we always have used motorcycle tyres on our premises.
We use a recycling firm to collect these tyres, where they are then processed at a specialist recycling plant and used to make other products. We feel that giving these tyres a second lease of life is the best way of reducing their carbon footprint.
A common use for old motorcycles and car tyres is to grind them up using heavy-duty machinery and turn them into rubber pellets. These are used on modern 3G and 4G astroturf pitches and children’s playgrounds where they’re bonded with a resin to create a surface that’s safer for children.
Some tyres are also used for fuel, as rubber contains a similar amount of energy as oil and is 25% more efficient than coal. The tyres are processed and then used in large-scale industrial applications like cement kilns and paper plants.

We also give away our used tyres to members of the community, who use them for a wide range of applications.
They’re popular with gardeners who turn them into planters (made prettier by wrapping rope around the tyres). Some people also use them to help build graduated ponds, as the tyre makes it easy to create a perfect circle in which to lay your waterproof layer. They can be painted, screwed into a wall and used as a hanging basket.
They’re also used in rope swings in gardens and used to create obstacle courses and tyre bridges.
Used motorcycle tyres are also used in other areas where the energy-absorbing nature of a tyre comes in useful, like horse-riding venues, kids playgrounds, boat fenders and go-kart circuit walls.
