Metzeler Roadtec 01 + Roadtec 01 SE

32 reviews

The Roadtec 01 SE superseeded the original Roadtec 01 in 2020. The main difference is it has more rubber in contact with the road at full lean creating a more stable feeling. The wet weather performance is still incredible. The only slight downside (in our opinion) is that it's maybe not as quick steering as some of it's competitors tyres. The original Roadtec 01 was MCN tyre of the year in 2016 and 2017.

Description

The Two Tyres 1-minute guide to the Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE

What is it: Metzeler’s top of the range sports touring tyre designed to offer ultimate all-weather grip and return great mileage too. We’ve ridden on these on a variety of bikes, from an R1250GS to a Ducati 998S and they’re a superb choice for real-world riding.

What tyre it replaces: The SE replaces the original Roadtec 01 and was introduced early 2020.

Who is it aimed at: The rider who values grip and mileage and enjoys riding in all conditions. The Roadtec 01 SE is one of the best wet weather tyres on the market and won’t let you down in the dry when you want to push on.

Typically seen on: While some might argue the Roadtec 01 is a Touring tyre, it’s firmly in the Sports Touring category due to its excellent grip and handling. You’re likely to see them fitted to a wide range of road bikes, from the BMW S1000XR, Suzuki GSX-S1000F and KTM SuperDuke 1290 GT or smaller-engined versatile bikes like the Honda VFR800 and Yamaha Tracer 700.

Roadtec 01 SE highlights: Seriously fast warm-up time and almost unrivalled wet-weather performance. Next to no compromise when it comes to mileage, grip and wet weather performance – this tyre delivers it all.

Roadtec 01 SE sizes: Fitments for pretty much any road-going bike from the past decade. Metzeler also produces the Roadtec 01 SE in 19″ front wheel sizes, meaning that you can run them on your Adventure bike. A KTM 1290 Super Adventure S on Roadtec 01s? Yes please!

A heavyweight option: The Roadtec 01 HWM is a heavyweight version designed for really big or fully-loaded tourers

A cheaper option: The Roadtec 01 SE is Metzeler’s premium Sports Touring tyre. Check out the Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact if you’re after a tyre with the same attributes but at a lower price.

The competition: Launched in 2020 the Roadtec 01 topped lots of magazine tyre tests. However it faces keen competition from the likes of the Michelin Road 5, the Bridgestone T32, the Pirelli Angel GT2 and not forgetting the Continental Road Attack 3.

Metzeler says:

The Metzeler Roadtec 01 is a Sport Touring tyre offering riders:

  • A top-line sport touring tyre for all-weather riding, with revised Roadtec 01 SE for 2020.
  • Big increases in wet weather grip thanks to a new compound and radical new tread pattern.
  • Increased durability to give riders more mileage for their money.
  • Latest in compound technology for fast warm up times, and to further boost wet grip.
  • Roadtec 01 HWM for heavier bikes (please call if in any doubt what one is for you).

The Best Touring Motorcycle Tyre

Metzeler’s Roadtec 01 has won countless awards and has glowing reviews from the press and owners. Just check out some of the accolades: MCN Tyre of the Year 2016 and 2017. Motorrad magazine best wet weather motorcycle tyre.

Grip

Improved compound solution that enhance chemical grip and adhesive properties in all different situations. Our patented mixing process delivers a more homogeneous compound that emphasizes the chemical properties and results more resistant to the wear process. Radial fronts feature a full-silica compound, capable of providing excellent chemical grip in conjunction with the mechanical grip created by the groove layout.

Radial rears feature a dual-compound layout, where the center stripe covers approximately 20% of the tyre width, with the remaining 80% equally split between the two shoulders. The central stripe has a balanced mixture of silica and carbon-black to enhance high-speed stability, heat dispersal and to provide balance between abrasion resistance and grip.  The full-silica compound on the shoulder is similar to that of the front; combined with the tread groove design it delivers excellent grip also on low friction surfaces. The use of a similar compound on front and rear shoulders provides a homogeneous contact feeling into lean. The Cap&Base scheme – featuring a thin layer of central compound extending underneath the shoulder compound – provides proper heat distribution. All ROADTEC™ 01 radials are coupled with the Metzeler 0° steel belt Interact™ technology, contributing both to riding precision and high mileage.

ROADTEC™ 01 X-Ply fronts and rears feature a unique carbon-black based compound with a percentage of silica close to 30% that exploits the heat generated by the structure to reach optimal operating temperature and delivers top grip in the dry. Special resins enhance compound mobility and adhesive properties for incomparable wet grip.

Safety

On ROADTEC™ 01, Metzeler developed a new concept of tread design capable to enhance mechanical traction, with a clearly perceivable benefit when accelerating and braking.

Front tyre features a large amount of transversal grooves that grip the asphalt as single elements and increase the amount of water drained. Rear tyres feature both long and short grooves with opposed orientation and with different functions.

When braking, the short grooves prevent lateral movements and increase motorcycle stability. When accelerating, the long grooves enhance the traction of the compound especially on low friction surfaces. The groove orientation contributes also to increase the mileage: both groove design and pitch have been tuned to leverage on a high land-sea ratio and a high quantity of rubber in contact with the ground.

At the same time, the groove orientation, follows the direction of the wear-wave lines, ensuring a regular consumption of the tread and allowing tread design to last until the very end of the tyre’s life. The shape and layout, besides being a distinguishing feature of ROADTEC™ 01 tread design, greatly contribute to maximize the level of water drainage and mechanical friction.

Mileage

ROADTEC™ 01 increased the mileage by 10% vs. ROADTEC™ Z8 INTERACT™. The innovative profiles generate a short and wide footprint area that reduces compound consumption and increases wear regularity. The ROADTEC™ 01 contact patch is shorter, wider and has a larger area if compared to that of the ROADTEC™ Z8 INTERACT™ that brings two main effects:

  • Reduced slippage of the compound, significantly delaying the rubber wear process
  • Motorcycle weight and acceleration forces are distributed on a wider surface, reducing compound stress and overheating

The footprint area of ROADTEC™ 01 includes a higher quantity of grooves and edges contemporarily in contact with the road, enhancing mechanical grip, water drainage and safety feeling; It also ensures more rubber in contact with the ground, especially during mid-lean, allowing a better chemical grip starting from the very beginning of the lean.

Stability

Tailored structures, characterised by adaptive behaviour, regardless of your motorcycle or riding style.  The structures of ROADTEC™ 01 feature more flexible carcasses (compared to ROADTEC™ Z8 INTERACT™) allowing compound deformation to enable mechanical grip, enhance adherence to asphalt asperities and facilitate absorption of road irregularities (patches, bumps, stone paving).

Metzeler takes advantage of the whole technological portfolio in different applications to provide the best solution matching product target performance so both radial and X-Ply structures are used, coupled with either bias or 0° steel belts with Interact™ technology. The structure underneath each size of the ROADTEC™ 01 range is tuned in construction and material according to the specific need of each fitment.

Press Reviews

“Overall, the ROADEC 01 tyres impressed. We’ll need to run them for several thousand miles in order to give you a longer term and more realistic review in terms of their durability and the claimed increase in mileage but following the array of surfaces and conditions on a range of bikes, the Metzeler’s are strong performers. Precise, stable and predictable with comfort too. While the £250 outlay may seem hefty, you’ll struggle to find another tyre that is as versatile.” – Bennetts

—

“Overall, the Roadtec 01 is impossible to fault given its place in the market. If you’re looking for a tyre that offers a gazillion miles without upsetting handling, look no further. Usually a do-it-all hoop with incredible wet weather performance can feel slightly guff when the roads dry up. Not the 01. Still 10/10…” – 44Teeth

—

“With such versatility, sporty handling, and wet weather grip, it’s hard to see a better option for somebody looking for proper performance ability from their sports touring rubber, the new Metzeler Roadtec SE hoops are a large step above their predecessors and many of the competition.” – Visordown

—

“What I can report is that the 01 still performed admirably, stopping dead on the soaked cobblestones, and I can attest to their all round wet grip from the Alpine course as absolutely fecking epic.” Fast Bikes

—

“With a big trip and a trackday approaching on the Ducati SuperSport S, I wanted something that could cope with both ends of the riding spectrum.

The Roadtec 01s were selected as the tyre of choice and on my 1,300-mile round trip to Scotland I was impressed by their ability to cope with the varying conditions.

Despite a lot of motorway miles, they kept their shape and tread pattern and within a week were being called to supply great levels of grip and confidence on a wet-but-drying Rockingham racetrack.

They coped admirably, although they did start showing some signs of wear as the track dried.

Now they have completed almost 3,000 miles, they are still performing. I am not sure I’d tackle another track day on them, but they’re fine for cold and wet commutes.” Motorcycle News editor Andy Calton

—

“We tested the new Metzeler Roadtec 01 rubber at Pirelli’s wet-weather circuit in Vizzola, Milan on a Honda CB1000R, in single-figure temperatures.

“The tight 0.62 mile track features different grades of tarmac to simulate high and low-grip surfaces and deep puddled sections to test how a tyre deals with aquaplaning. What impressed us both is how much grip and confidence they gave and how they clung to drenched tarmac. In a straight line I had to be ruthless with the front brake to get our test bike’s ABS to kick-in, and brutal on the throttle to make the rear tyre spin. It takes a while to get your head around the amount of grip you have and how much solid wet-weather lean it allows”. –  Michael Neeves, MCN.

—

“We fitted these Metzelers before I’d even ridden the old ‘cat, so I’ve got nothing to compare them to. But the grip, always the most important thing, is strong in the dry, and very impressive in wet or damp conditions too (not that we’ve had much of that this summer.)

They also seem to be wearing well too. The centre of the rear is flattening off a little, but nowhere near being ready for replacement. I reckon I’ll maybe get 5000 miles from the rear and 10,000 from the front, which is mightily impressive”. –  Practical Sportsbike, Damian Smith

—

“The current standard in the field of sport touring. It has taken all the strengths of the Z8 and surpassed them in some areas, especially the surprisingly good wet grip. In addition, can be more agile and offers better ‘lean feel’ when taking the curves. After 6,200 miles (10,000 km) still 3mm left of residual profile, front and rear.” – BMW Motorcycle Magazine

Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE

Fitted these to my GS1200 to replace the 'nervous in the wet Anakee 3's'. Really impressed, lots of confidence, changed the ride. I've used these on my Speed Triple also, same result, perfect for UK year round road riding.

Metzeler Raodtec 1 as usual beautifully balanced tyre with a lovely tip in on bends and more grip than you are ever going to need. Replacing standard Dunlops on a Tracer 900 GT quite a difference.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

5 Stars

I wasn't sure the size inner tubes I needed, so rang. They were extremely helpful, friendly and gave me the information I needed. Within 5 minutes I had got my answers, tubes ordered, paid and receipted - wow. I am usually cautious about using someone for first time, and not local (I live in Notts). I do recommend Two Tyres. Great job guys.

Called up and was able to get an appointment for the same day to replace both tyres on my BMW R1200 GSA. Not only was it great to get seen so quickly, compared to the 5 week wait I had been quoted by Motorrad, but Chris was able to offer some advice and guidance on which tyres best suited my needs. I cannot praise the service enough from Chris and the team and I will definitely be back for my next set of tyres!

5 Stars

Great service from these guys, I ordered on line and accidentally ordered two items the same, maybe clicked twice waiting for the page to change. They called me to check this wasn't a mistake (which it was) and immediately refunded me for the accidental purchase and sent out just one item. I know I'll be using them to get my tyres & tubes in future.
